Brake Master Cylinder - Replace with Dual or Single?
Hi All,
Bit of background first: Last night my brakes failed. They felt weak, and after Id pumped them a few times the pedal went straight to floor. No pressure at all. I called the AA out who towed it to a local Porsche garage. The garage say it's the master cylinder. I havent had a chance to inspect it fully myself, but there is some fluid under the pedals. He is quoting about £300 to replace, but I can get a master cylinder myself for £95. But the parts place say it's a single master cylinder and not the dual type as on my car (US '76 911). So my question is can I just fit a single master cylinder in it's place? This would be the first work I've done myself on my Porsche, so Im being a bit cautious. The last thing I worked on was an '82 Ford Escort XR3i. ;-) Thanks, Alex ------------------ 911 2.7S Targa email:alex@cascade.f9.co.uk |
Alex,
Yes, I believe you can replace your single circuit master cylinder with a single master cylinder, dual circuit unit for very little difference in cost! And, the only additional parts you would need are a dual-conpartment brake fluid reservoir, and the tubing to connect it to the dual-circuit master cylinder. USA-spec parts may be a bit hard to get in the UK, but would probably be worth the wait. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
Hi,
Thanks for the response Warren. I think I confused my question a bit, I have US car at the moment with the Dual Master Cylinder. I was actually wondering if I could fit a single one in it's place. So you gave me the info I needed, only in reverse. :-) On reflection I think I will try to get the dual master cylinder and not convert it to a single one. Thanks for your help.
