delaying clutch replacement.

Clutch pedel went to the floor the other day. Limped to the wrench to have him take a look. He put it up in the air after barely looking at it, I mean in less than 2 sec's, he said I need a new clutch. $1800! Me not ready to shell out 1800 so I thank him for checking it out and limp home. PP tech article says "before any expensive clutch work, replace the cable and springs" So I order the parts. While waiting for parts I decide to try and adjust it first. Took everything apart in the footwell and adjusted all the slack out of the cable, which brought the pedel back up to normal position. Test drive seemed okay. Clutch now engages near the top of the pedel traval which from what I understand is a tell tale sign that the clutch needs replacing. Did I buy myself 2mo, 1 week, 6mo? Should I put in the new cable when I get it? Is there another adjustment I need to make at the rear of the cable?

Yes, there is an adjustment procedure that is done at the trans. You could easily have a lot of life left in it. I have mine pedal setup with the engagement at the top of the pedal range. I like it that way for speedy shifting. (Not "speed shifting".)

I am going to install a new clutch in mine over the winter. I know that I have been hard on it while adjusting to the 915 box over the past 6 years. It still works but I have to pull the trans for my 5th gear issue anyway. I figure I will have about $500.00 total with the clutch job. No labor charges as I will do it myself. You could do this as well with some Pelican helpers.

Check out this pic where I replaced the stock bushing with the bronze bushing. The cable wears through the stock plastic bushing and then will start wearing through the pedals shaft. I'd check the condition of this bushing before getting a new clutch.

Do you push your C-pedel all the way down? I'm thinking no?

Anthony - Bushing looks okay. Original though.

Ray,

Before you do anything adjust it at the trany end. That adjustment is much more responsive. If it solves the problem that you've got a stretched cable and replace it. If not than you've got a spent clutch, so breakout the beer and the tools................
