intake manifold gasket--question

I've just taken off my right side intake manifold to check for a blown intake gasket. They look good, but I got some from our host so I could change them. My question is this. The book says it takes two per cylinder, but I see only one in the origanal configuration on the block. There is a thin gasket on top and underneath I see a hard rubber gasket about 3/8 inch thick , but I dont see another thin gasket under it. Why, since there is not 2, do I need to replace with 2 ? I dont want to screw it up, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks

There should be TWO gaskets. One under and one above the bakelite spacer. If you don't have a lower gasket, then it most probably got sucked into your intake, which I hear is quite common for these cars. Install two and torque down the manifold accordingly (18# I think?).

Hell, forget about saturday, ----I found my PROBLEM. It was a blown intake gasket. The symptoms were: rough idle, popping during idle, sluggish during low RPM, and a miss during steady driving about 2000 RPM. I have to thank Jack Olson with the exact solution long ago. I just drove the car tonight for a short drive, but the difference was really great. I now have all 6 cylinders, and isn't that what Porsche's are all about.
