It really depends on the circumstances and no particular way is safer than others but this is what i do when the unfortunate event arises (drove a 74' beetle through high school with a bad starter)

#1. Park on a hill (if no hills, move to #2 [hills-move to #3])

#2. Have a pusher and a driver with enough dexterity to push with the door open and hop in without loseing your ride to you tripping and having your beautiful (why doesn't it start again?...but its sure beautiful) 911 smash into traffic with no driver.

#3. Hop in, slam the door closed.

#4. Make sure the freaking key is on! Cause if not you sputter to a stop with no ignition and you feel even more like a moron cause your already pushing your beautiful 911 right.

#5. Clutch.

#6. Select 2nd gear if you are going over 10 mph, under 10 mph use first, it's just harder on the drivetrain.

#7. Drop the clutch with the key on with enough speed, if you have to, give the gas pedal some love.

#8. HOUSTON WE HAVE IGNITION!

Just remember, fuel-injected cars must have a battery strong enough to run the fuel pump & ignition system otherwise it won't fire.

This procedure works great for carbureted cars with mechanical fuel pumps and manual transmissions. If an automatic-equipped car happens to have a rear oil pump in the tranny (rare), it works OK on those too.

great tips - also be ready to dip the clutch as it starts or you will set off pretty quickly!

You can also start it in reverse. I've had to do that once in my 911 in a parking garage when the starter motor started going bad. Same procedure; just get it up to speed and pop the clutch.

However, it's less safe because rather than losing the car if it gets away from you, you'd get knocked down by the door and run over. Forward is preferred!

I found that the easiest way is to use 4th gear with ignition on.
The ratio in 2nd, or reverse, is just too rough on the power-train.
If your battery is good, turn ignition on, roll down the hill, put it in 4th and release the clutch.
