supercharged 3.2 conversion

I finally got the car just about where I want it. (for now) But I thought I would post a few pics for everyone. 76 tub, with paxton supercharged 3.2, 915 limited slip, big suspension and big brakes. All the usual mods one would expect to go along with a blown 3.2 in an early tub.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1160414641.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1160414664.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1160414679.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1160414691.jpg

C'mon! You can't talk like that and not show any engine pics... GEEZ, what are you thinking? :)

450knotOffice 10-09-2006 10:35 AM

Wow. That car is sweet! Deep down I have always preferred the post '73 look to the early look, everything else being equal. They're just more modern looking, imo.

Great job. What kind of horsepower is that engine making?

Wavey 10-09-2006 10:47 AM

Wow! More pics! More engine info!

Whtnkls911 10-09-2006 11:38 AM

Please share the details on the supercharger conversion. Who made it? Boost level? HP? I am considering the same setup.

he's a newb :D
engine pics are required now.......meaning now :D

jester911 10-09-2006 12:34 PM

Yep this thread is meaningless without engine pics. This is like a stripper walking in fully clothed and telling us, you oughta see what is under the overcoat.

TroyGT 10-09-2006 12:50 PM

Bring it Bill... you big teaser.

MattAlpha 10-09-2006 01:21 PM

Engine pics are a must.

Supercharger specs are a must. Or as the Germans call it "Kompressor".

Thanks,
Matt

paxton supercharged 3.2,
OK, I'll bite. Where are the engine pics?

Sorry guys. ok here it is without all the fancy crome plated brackets. It is very close to the SOK setup. I used the same chip and fuel pressure regultor, but I had to fabricate all of the mounting brackets and ducting. I've been in contact with the owner of SOK (superchargers of knoxville) who pretty much walked me through the process. They stopped making this kit quite some time ago. It puts out between 7-8 lbs of boost, and according to SOK will boost a bone stock 3.2 to 345 hp. Ive never dynoed it but this blower on any slightly modifyed 3.2 in an early car will beat most things on the road. The power curve is very linear, with zero lag. Another advantage to the paxton is that it has a self contained oil system, and requires no intercooler. Bascially, it pulls like theres a big block chevy engine back there, but under normal driving conditions you cant even tell its there.

Nice execution. I've been thinking of doing something similar using a supercharger from a 3.8L Ford T-bird Supercoupe. Guys have been putting them on 4.0 Rangers and getting 75+ HP at the rear wheels. Do you get any belt slippage with the V-belt? Also that looks like a modified Ford belt tensioner, am I right?

No intercooler required? They're never required but do help build power and decrease chances for detontation on a stock higher compression engine. I'd consider one if I were you.

Rodsrsr 10-09-2006 10:11 PM

The tensioner on the left hand side is off any 80s or 90s mustang. However I have it mounted solid directly to the motor mount. Its only purpose is to drop the belt straight down from the blower. The tensioner on the right is the one used for belt adjustment. I think it came off an early (mid 70s) Chevy. But I'm sure there are several ways one could go about getting the drive set-up. As far as I can tell there is no slippage whatsoever. I just check the belt and the fluid periodically. According to SOK the Whipple supercharger uses an intercooler, but all of the kits they sold since the 90s did not use one for the Paxton. Apparently they felt the Paxton did not generate enough heat and adding one would yield very limited improvement. But being that I am not a professional in this area I am not really qualified to give a definitive answer. I hope this helps.

Very interesting setup! It's giving me ideas, but I have the RoW 3.2 with higher compression. Any ideas if it'll work on that motor?

Patton 10-09-2006 11:53 PM

Awsome!

That's exactly what I've been looking for. Any idea what the guys in Knoxville charge? Do they have a DIY kit?

Thanks,

naparsei 10-10-2006 05:32 AM

Any idea if that supercharger would fit under a stock decklid?

DonMo 10-10-2006 06:32 AM

Can you share with us your steps for the setup, what part you used for what, where to get the tubing, etc. Many of us dream of 345 HP on a DIY project.

juicersr 10-10-2006 08:34 AM

Rod, PM sent regarding cost, parts. Thanks

Patton 10-10-2006 08:56 AM

Juicersr,
I'd like that information as well. I would very much appreciate it.

MattAlpha 10-10-2006 09:49 AM

Throw me into that same info group.

Awesome set-up. I spoke to TRECUP about that exact setup during our "pelican dinner" at Tarpys.

Thanks,
Matt

The hardest part will be getting someone to program a chip compatible with the blower. Any rising rate fuel pressure regulator will work, and of course you will have to fabricate all the ducting and mounting brackets. Yes its a lot of work, but its much eaiser than a turbo. I know that SOK made this unit for the ROW cars, but they didnt recomend it, as the comp ratio is too high, and a different chip is used to retard the ign timing even further than for a us spec car. Additional you need to have at least a turbo tail (without ac) to accomidate the blower. I tryed it with a ducktail, and its not even close. Anybody want to buy a ducktail? SOK is no longer in business, and hasent been making these kits for the last five or so years.

I was told that a company called TCP was working on a 3.2 setup using an whipple type supercharger, but I dont know if its now availible.

deanprichard 10-10-2006 09:42 PM

yea the ford tensioner is from a 86-93 mustang gt although most ford 5.0 or 5.8 engines had them, among other ford products.
making boost (compressing air) is what generates heat, and intercooler always provides denser air and more horsepower.
the eaton m90 (thunderbird supercoupe) is a twin screw roots type blower that offers more low end torque than the picturesd centrifual type blower. a current project we have going on is a Twincharged merkur xr4ti with a eatonm90, hx40 turbo and volvo head. running a bypass valve to use blower boost down low, then switch to turbo boost as it spools.
kinda like the lancia delta s4 and other group b rally cars....

shbop 10-10-2006 10:30 PM

How's the noise level on this particular unit? Does it whine all the time? Thanks!

Rodsrsr 10-11-2006 01:20 AM

No thats whats cool about it , it only whines when your up over 4500 rpm, It kinda sounds like a turbo spooling up.

IIRC, TCP was written up in Excellence quite a few years ago for a 3.2 SC system they developed. I called when I read the article and they denied it ever went to production.

Dean: sounds lie an interesting project you have there.

Also, Steve Wong may be able to help with the chip.
