quick..if your bored.. question

So what happens if I run my 2.7 with ssi and no muffler? Why would I want to do that you may ask? Because I have a rattle that is assumed to be in my old Bursch muffler{baffles rotted} and would like to remove and see if the noise goes away. I realize having no muffler is going to make its own noise, but will help me know for sure if the noise is coming from the Bursch. Can there be any ill effect to the motor from a short or long term run without a muffler, just open SSI's 76s CIS 2.7 With recent partial rebuild. Thanks for any input or other threads you could point me towards.

I have the exact same problem, I had this confirmed by a mechanic. He confirmed that I had a cracked baffle inside the muffler.

A freind of mine with a 993 Turbo was considering a FabSpeed muffler bypass but wanted to get a feel for the sound. So he took the muffler off and ran the car around the block a few times. Other than the annoyance to his neighbors he did no engine damage. However the puddle of melted rubber on his driveway and the hole in his lower bumper valance is another story. Exhaust gas is hot!

I don't think it will harm your engine though.

I would think it would be so loud you would not tell if there is a rattle or not except maybe your teeth.

Not trying to hi-jack the thread but.......
It looks like alot of "bored" Porsche owners in Marietta today:) We should be out driving on this beautiful day.

Seriously, other than the heat and the fumes (if you are going to go driving) the engine should be OK. It's basically what any racecar exhaust is doing.

You'll probably want a couple of short pipes attached to the end of the SSI's to carry the exhaust out from under the bumper. Other than that, it's going to be really, REALLY LOUD!!!

I've ran my fabspeed muffler delete pipe for a couple of months. Doesn't hurt a thing... except dogs, neighbor's ears, harley dude's ego's... etc. Love that deep sound... throttle response is better too.

Thanks for the input and I will give you a update of how it goes. What would two cherry bombs do just for fun? not as a finite solution?

masraum 10-09-2006 04:19 PM

Just make sure that if you bolt something like a cherry bomb or something to the end of the SSI's that you fabricate some sort of hanger ala the hanger used with megaphones to support that weight or you could end up with cracks in the SSI's.

Just take the muffler off and shake it. If it doesn't rattle, the problem is in the car.
