Fuel distributor and cold start issue link???
I recently had some severe cold start and hot start issues with my 73.5 CIS. After my mechanic replaced the WUR and CSV (among other things), the car is good on hot starts, however the cold start issue still remains. I need to depress the pedal in order to get some reaction from the engine, but once it kicks in after a few seconds it comes to life. My mechanic has mentioned that the fuel head/distributor had been severely "tinkered" with and was resulting in extremely low fuel pressure. My question is whether this issue alone could be a reason why I still have cold start issues or is the extremely low fuel pressure in no way related to the cold start issues...any ideas or input would be appreciated...

From what I've dealt with on my CIS, the low fuel pressure IS a problem, maybe associated with your problem. you shouldnt have to depress the pedal at all during startup. How old is the fuel pump?
More experienced guys will most certainly be of more help than I am. Fuel Pump/check valve? Accumulator?

I just went through this with my '74 and we (my mechanic and I) decided that the CIS would take too much $ and time to get "right". The fuel pump was replaced with a new one and the pressures are within normal range, but the car still won't run wproperly when the throttle is opened quickly. We checked everything and the problem is probably in the Fuel Distributor, but those things are expensive! We're switching the car to Webers right now... I'll have some spare CIS parts up for sale soon...

Did the mechanic do the full battery (cold, hot, etc.) of CIS tests to truly isolate the cause of the low fuel pressure? I'm somewhat surprised that both the CSV and WUR required replacing. Before tinkering with the FD I would ensure that the CSV circuit is working correctly and make sure the fuel pump is providing adequate flow and pressure. Both of these components are significantly cheaper that a FD. The 1973.5 and 1974 911 CIS CSV systems were unique and sometimes not understood by the mechanics or drivers. See the below thread for some insight and troubleshooting suggestions:
911 73T CIS issues Note that the 1973.5 CIS doesn't have a thermotime switch in it's CSV circuit. Last edited by Jim Sims; 10-10-2006 at 11:10 AM.. |
