Correct horn arrangement

I recently re-acquired a 73S Targa sixteen years after selling it( long story). This past week I was working on the horns and question whether they are correctly installed. These are the trumpet style and original to the car. The longer one is mounted on an "L" bracket on the back of the battery box under the left fender. It is aimed straight down. The shorter one is mounted to a bracket held by the bumper to body bolt and is horizontal- aimed straight back. This dosen't seem right to me but I can't remember the original from back in the 70's. Anyone know the correct position? Thanks. BillM

Bill:

I've had my 1983 911 SC since new, and both horns have been, and continue to be, facing straight down. I really don't think that's the best way to get sound out to the chap in front of you, but there is scant room down there to do it any other way. What with the turn signal enclosure, with the oil cooler, and the tight wheel well, mine can't mount any other way.

However, there is a long and a short horn, to allow for the distinctive "beep" of Porsches. If you listen to just one or the other, you'll see that together they make a much nicer sound. Good old German engineering, I guess.

That said, if you have more room than I do, I would mount the horn facing forward, in a slightly down attitude, to drain water out of them, and that way you will have maximum sound dispersion forward where you want it. I supopose Porsche AG placed them facing down so that no water or slush could get into them......Andras

Thanks, Andras. Since I posted my question I was able to consult a partsbook for a 73S. The long trumpet is aimed down and the short one is aimed forward- just as you suggested. Thans again. Bill
