'77 3.0 Carrera engine the same as '77 930 engine?
Hi,
Someone might know this: Is the '77 3.0 Carrera engine the same as '77 930 engine minus the turbo? Someone has told me this and I dont think so, but I cant find out for sure. R, Alex ------------------ 911 2.7S Targa email:alex@cascade.f9.co.uk |

Well now, I'm certainly no authority on this but.... I doubt that these two are identical internally. Think about compression ratio's and cam profiles and you quickly can see some solid reasoning for the differences.

Also, besides compression ratio and cams, the heads on a turbo are a different metal compond than non-turbo heads.(to withstand higher temperatures). The distributor advances differently. The turbo requires an oil pump that is driven by a camshaft. The air pump is also driven by the same camshaft.
The fuel injection system is different. So is the intake system.(and many other differences) If You mean the basic engine block,(besides the cams, the copression ratio and head material), I believe the engines are the same. If you mean the complete engine, there are too many details to be considered the same engine only one is turbo charged. Bob w. |

The engine case, the crankshaft, the rods are the same. The oil pump is bigger. The pistons, the heads, the intake system, the ignition are different.
The case and the crank are what makes this the best of the 3.0 liters for preparations. They are much lighter than the SC pieces (I believe 14Kg), which makes them much freer revving. The difference is quite impressing. The Carrera engine gains RPM, and loses RPM so easily, lt makes rev matching a breeze. Reliability does not seem impaired by the lightweight. Mine has 110.000 miles, zero problems Starting '78, the case, crank and rods were shared with the 3.3 turbo engine, which was bomb-proof. That's why we now see SCs with incredible mileage still going strong. Happy motoring, GeorgeK |
