half a million miles; running strong

My friend is selling his '90 C2 with nearly 500K miles. This is an amazing car and a testament to P-car durability. As a fellow PCA instructor, I've been in the passenger seat of this car at Sebring and can guarantee that it has been used as it was designed. And, obviously the owner drove it A LOT every day on the road. Someone's gonna get a deal. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=017&item=270036468855&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

This makes me wonder why some people have the mentality that they must stay away from a car with 100k miles. If these cars have the ability to last this long then there shouldn't be a problem buying a well documented 100k or more mile car, and probably get a good deal too.

There you go....

Drive the car, do the preventative maintenance, don't ignore problems signs and you'll have the car forever.......

That's great. I'm only at 57K on my Carrera, guess I have to play catch-up. I think it's a steal at that price, looks well-cared for.

From the listing: "At 400,000 the car was sent to Andial in Calif and a new 3.8 liter engine was installed. This engine was freshened at 497,000 by that I mean all new bearings, seals, oil pump, and valve guides."

If it was indeed a new engine, why a complete rebuild 97K miles later? I call new mains, etc., a complete rebuild, not just "freshening." I'm not trying to slam the car, looks like a good one. I recently bought my car with 235K miles and a lot of the car is very nice. No squeaks, rattles or really tattered looking parts. Even the seats are passable; only one tiny area really worn out on the driver's outer bolster.

I recently scrubbed the wheel wells of all that collected in the 235K miles (since I don't think most ever do this, I assume it was dirt from all the mles) and the parts look new now. It's easy to keep a car looking as good as the one on eBay.'

Amyway, its got a new motor. Should sell for well into the 15's.

Like the reporters ask the 115 years old person from Tibet how she came to reach such high age still going strong, I would really like to know how that 964 was maintained, stored and driven threw its life.

Damned impressive! Could the "million mile Mercedes" have a Porsche closing in on it's record? But the big question remains...will she do 165 mph?

If the engine was replaced at 400K, the competition is over. It's a new engine, only the chassis has 500K miles. I'd be impressed if even the 400 K this mileage was achieved without cracking the case though - I've seen a virgin SC with 400K with my own eyes.... Ran like new, but it was never raced !

Still, if that C2 made it to 400K and lots of track days, that's a great sign for properly maintained 3.6s !

I dont mean to be a nay sayer... i mean, its great that it's reached that many miles... but any car can reach that many miles.

The question is, how much work did the origional engine see? ANd of course how are the wheel bearings, shocks, suspension, blah blah blah... if it moves, it wears.

Besides, these engines can truely be dismantled so if a part wears out, it's replaceable. A Honda could probrably last that long if properly maintained, i wont even talk about Kia's or Hyundai's.

Im curious about the service history and so on and so fourth.... but, I don't want a 964.

Another thing I find curious about this car though is the drivers seat... 16 year old car with 500k miles, that's a LOT of use in the seat and it doesnt appear to be that worn. Just food for thought :-D

Shape of the driver seat: looks pretty worn out to me. With that many miles in a relatively short period of time (average about 85 miles/day, day in day out), it is obvious that the driver spent a lot of time behind the wheel at once, with a comparable fewer times getting in and out of the car -which is when the seat is getting the most beating. Someone running errands around town with lots of getting in and out would get the seats in the same shape within a much shorter period, and within a lot less miles.
