1st engine drop (and I did it single handed).

Like a walk in the park everyone..

Now I'm wondering if I can get it back in myself as well. Sorry.. No pics yet..

Enjoy,

Let me be the first to say congrats! I pulled mine for the first time by myself last xmas break. Not terribly hard, but not like any other engine I've ever pulled. I used an engine hoist to lift the rear of the car versus getting it way up in the air with jackstands. Much safer I thought, and I had the engine hoist so I didn't need to buy the RV jackstands. Gotta love them Targas!

I'll be the second to congratulate you. Putting it back in solo isn't as easy, but doable.

Congrats!

I have this looming in my future...sometime in the next year.
All of the threads here will help guide me through it along with the Bentley manual and Wayne's books.

Just don't be afraid. Even if the next to worst thing happens- you drop the engine on the ground- usually nothing gets very messed up. If the worst thing happens- you drop it on yourself- things get more messed up.

always throw the wheels under the car when jacked up for xtra safety. I put mine back in, awkward but nothin' but leverage involved.

Wow Hugh!!
That's a great idea.
I have a engine hoist.
But I have a question.
Where exactly did you pick up the rear of the car?

Hugh R 10-12-2006 03:13 PM

Take out the engine mounts and make a plug with a lifting eye hook that is bigger than the engine mount holes and mount underside. DON"T lift through the mounts themselves, they'll probably rip out.

Thanks for the kudos..

Thanks everyone for the congrats...

I have a helper to put it back in tomorrow.. I just dropped it to clean it up, check for the common leaks, adjust the valves, etc..

I think I may need a shifter shaft seal and that's about it. I'm not seeing any leakage between the jugs and block so I hope this means no broken head studs on the exhaust side.

Enjoy,
HFR_Racer.

If you didn't already use one to do the drop, go buy an ATV jack for the reinstall.

All is well.. No broken studs..

No broken head studs found at 60k miles. Valves adjusted. Engine and transmission cleaned up and shifter rod seal installed.. Time to re-install..

I think I understand you, but could you say that again differently? Are you saying you held the motor up while you replaced the bolts with forged eye hooks and then put a chain between them to lift the rear of the car? If so, did this not put an undue lateral strain on the mounts?

Maybe I'm lost here.
