Need help evaluting burned C2 Targa

Hi everyone,
I will be looking at a 911 C2 Targa Tiptronic that was involved in an accident. The car was rear -ended and the engine caught fire. Owner says everything in front of the seats are perfect. Doors are smashed a bit, targa top is toast, a bit of the top of seats are also burnt. Car has 92k miles. Kinda high, though. The title is clear because the insurance company wasn't involved. What should I be looking for? The owner wants $6500, but I need a few tips and hints on what I should look for. I know it's a 911 that's been in an accident, but it's alright. Any and all suggestions/comments are appreciated. Thanks!

Jeff,

Make sure that no additional bolt-on items have been removed. Many cars like this are picked apart before they are sold. I'm speaking of items you can't see. Do your due diligence and you may get a deal.

Depends what you want the car for...
The seats are burnt, the wiring loom is shot, the fuel tank onjly fits '89-on cars...
The dash electrics are no use for older cars.
If you have a 964 with frontal damage it might be worth it. There are surprisingly few parts that fit a '76 911 on that car, so 6500 seems a lot if the fire damage is that extensive.

Thanks for the suggestions Rich and George.

Rich-Hopefully the owner didn't take anything off. I'll look for those things. Thanks!

George-Gee...I don't know. I was thinking more like fixing up the '91 if possible. If possible keep both cars. One as daily driver (A/C!) and one on weekends for fun. If I must sell one, so be it. It all depends. Thanks for the warning though.

Be very wary of engine fire 9's. When materials in and on the engine start to glow from heat, the surrounding frame which the engine hangs can/usually will start to sag. Sometimes the quarter glass will pop as it starts its sinking, and the fenders will buckle. Only a jig will tell the tale.
I would highly meditate on this factor if purchasing this car is for the purpose of driving it. s in Va

Just my H.O. but I don't need to tell you what it COULD cost to "fix up" a burnt 911. Think long and hard about the project. With a lot of our cars it is a labor of love not dollars and cents. You asked if it was a good deal?I guess what I'm saying is what are you going to do with it?You could go from 0.00 to 35,000.00 in about one second for, a good paint job, wireing looms, electronics, any plastic and rubber that had been burnt, any body panels that have been warped due to heat, complete interior and a 1500.00 Targa top ? etc, etc.if you want to strip it down and race it, that is another story.Whatever you think the time will be think this (time/ labor)to the second power + 2x the cost of parts + cost of car= one restored 911.Now this is up to you.If you want to weld 747 wings on it I'll help. Send me a ticket and I'll bring my TIG welder.I say this with love as I have done many custom projects and rebuilds and if done right they always cost a lot more time and money than you think. You also don't want to have (2) cars half done.Again just my 0.02.Good luck Jeff!

Thanks Tlook and Brett. I went to look at the car yesterday...it was in pretty sad shape. The rear was so smashed it's not even funny. The entire rear was burnt, so was the interior up to the front seats. The car was much worse than I thought it was. The only reasons why somebody would buy this car would be to either strip it for parts or find another C2 that crashed in front and combine it. Anyway, thanks for the replies. It's always sad to see a dead 911.
