1983 value w/1st gear problem

I decided to join on today after lurking for about 6 mos.

Ok, I have searched and searched and had a ton of fun seeing you guys walk someone through a tranny rebuild and an engine rebuild etc, fantastic resource this forum is.

I have been thinking about a 81-87 911 and ran accross one (83)with the head bolts replaced and carrera tensioners and a HD clutch. Documentation shows it to be pretty well kept.
The only issue is it has 1st gear problems and I would imagine it would be in for a rebuild pretty quick out the gate, also it is my guess as to why the current owner has put it up for sale.

What do you guys think it would cost for a shop to rebuild it and the going rate on it would be?

I had a chance about 6 months ago to get a 91 C2 for 14K from a dealer and decided to wait and think about it for the weekend. I went on Monday to get it and it was gone, so if it seems like a good enough deal I would like to get it and start playing with it.

Thanks

It depends a lot on what parts the tranny will actually need, but my guess would be in the 2-3K$ range.

I paid about 1.5K$ to have my 915 rebuilt about 10 years ago. Factor in R&R by a shop and all the 'while you're in theres', and you can see where this is going...

Depends on what it needs and where you live. If just syncronizers and dog teeth here in NC it would cost about $1200. Gears are expensive. But in CA who knows. That price does not include removal and installation. Hope this helps.

i do 1st gear only repairs for about $1200. that's eng/trans in/out and fix 1st only. a complete teardown is not required to do this. in fact you can leave the trans bolted to the engine. a complete rebuild is 4 hrs in and out plus 5 hrs to rebuild the trans, plus parts, which average $1200 or so.

Thanks, it seems to be in pretty good shape other than that, I want to get a PPI first but it would probably land in the $8500-9k range.

If it is more than a 1st gear issue:

14-15 hours to drop the motor/trans and rebuild the trans.

Parts $1000

Check anything rubber and replace it if the motor is out. Trust me on this one.

Before you do anything, replace the shift ball bushing, the shift linkage bushing and coupler bushings. Rule out the cheap things first. See the catalog prices from our host.

Good luck
