Muffler bypass question
I just watched the videos on Fabspeeds website. I like the sound of the muffler bypass with the cat bypass tube. Sounds very agressive. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with something similar only coming off the cat, bypassing the muffler only.

It's very loud. IMO, unless it's a race car with high lift cams, it sounds like crap.
Now, wcc has a GHL bypass with a Borla muffler on his 85 and it sounds sweet. |
Loud AND obnoxious....an air cooled motor has it's own special song.
BTW....in most cases they run better with the back pressure of a muffler. |
Really!
Sorry just kidding! Yeah I undertand the backpressure "issue" On most V8's, it is a non-issue. And on small 4's, especially todays highly tuned ones, it is defintely a BIG issue. I just wasn't sure how the flat-6 figured into the mix. My plan was not to run without backpressure altogether - I was leaving the cat in place and removing the muffler. The Fabspeed video showed cat bypass, and muffler gone, and aside from being loud, the car seemed to haul bootie. |
You don't say what model you have....but they make a "euro pre-muffler" relacement for the cat.....it adds a bit and you keep your current exhaust configuration....
3.0s and smaller can use SSIs....a s/s equal length heat exchanger (HE) that is a copy of the early HEs....they aren't smog legal in states that still have visual smog regs for your year...... If your car is smog exempt, the SSIs or early HEs are the best bang for your buck with a 2 in, 2 out muffler like a Bursch.... |
Yeah that has been what I have been gathering from the reading and questioning the last few days. I just spent most of my play money buying a friends vey excellent condition Ruby Red 83 cab. I will probably just change the muffler to a 1in 1out for now, and then go crazy next year. I like the rumble of the V8. I was getting ready to put a Rover 4.0L i my Miata - not necessarily to make it go faster, it had plenty, but just to hear it at the light. I know, it is "cavemannish"! Have you any info a to the best bang for the buck if a person was going 1in 1out? I see a lot of people talk well about the M&K. They do not seem to be too badly priced. However, someone posted an mpeg of a 911 with either a Magnaflow, or Flowmaster. Sounded great on the video... I will try to just drive the thing for a bit and get used to the tranny - but I am usually not one to just do that!

A lot of people buy Porsche only designer muffs.....they are expensive and they just bolt on.
You can use any muff that fits as long as you don't mind welding.... |
Ran the Fabspeed muffler delete on my 3.2 Carrera and loved it. It sounds fantastic, but it is extremely loud. Had it on there for over a month before I finally had to put my stock muffler back on. You'll find the throttle response better and the attention factor goes through the roof.

I just had a Dynomax muffler installed on my SC. Dynomax won't make your ears bleed like the Flowmaster. The exhaust note is oh so DYNOMITE!

I actually ran a Bursch Bypass pipe with an M&K 1in1out and thought it too loud and gurgly. I replaced the Bursch downpipe with a Dansk Hi-Flow 100 cell cat and it now produces a deep rumble that ratchets up when I open her up. The rumble is now deep and no longer obnoxious... but then again the gurgle of the by-pass pipe may be music to the ears of some folks...

Sound clips on-line don't really give you the true sound or feel. IMO. I think you really need to just go listen to some others exhaust systems and find out what they are running so you can match that if you like it. Your local PCA or a pelican gathering are a good places to start. |
Yeah good tip. Suuposed to be having one in Nov.
