Clunking in the rear
Just noticed after a 1000k weekend excursion and track driving, a clunking that seems to be eminating from the rear wheels on my 89 coupe. Very evident when driving over driveway entrances and lightly accelerating. Sound almost as if someone is in my engine bay and is knocking on the chassis. ?. Broken sway bar mount? I'll put a call into my housecalling mechanic whom I'm sure will get to the source, but until then I wondered if anyone had the same symptons. I'll post the solution to the problem when I get it, but until then, lets see which one of you can "name that noise!!!"

What's the prize for the person who gets it right?
My vote... broken sway bar mount. |

I am going to guess C/V joint.
Is it a clicking...when you start to drive? Have you noticed if it does it when you are rolling and don't have the car in gear? When you turn? Just some thoughts, Paul |

You may want to spend time with your mechanic for social reasons, but you could perhaps find the clunk yourself. Bad CV joints will clunk, but those clunks are likely to happen during acceleration. Clunking that is more associated with suspension travel, bumps and such would be loose exterior suspension pieces.
I too suspect an anti-sway bar mount. ANY exterior suspension piece that shows any play will make noise. Just grab pieces with your hand and shake them. There should be NO play. None. Not in the front either. ------------------ '83 SC |

I have visually inspected the sway bar mounts and cannot identify any cracking or looseness. I have heard that these models are prone to this. I'm going to take it for another ride today to gather more information. As far as prizes, maybe the knowledge that advice is valued? I know its not much, but thanks.

I also would suspect the driveshafts. This can be ascertained by holding the car at steady speed and rpm (preferably in low gear) and accelerating and then decelerating. If either or both shafts are at fault you should hear a "clunk" at each maneuver, this being the backlash. If however the "clunk" only occurs on bumps, then I would suspect sway bar or other suspension related components. Let us know.

Took a ride the other day. Of course no sounds anywhere. Don't know what to tell anyone until it comes again. Oh well.
