please help with exhausting problem

I have a 76 911s with an ,84 3.2 with triad heat exchangers and a triad 2 in 2 out muffler. About a year ago the exhaust smell from this engine became very strong and noxious. It is a very strong exhaust smell not gas or rotten eggs. It comes inside the car with or without the heater being on and when stopped at stop lights the car is enveloped in exhaust. Is there any way to tune the car to decrease the smell. Will a chip help. How do I check the heat exchangers for leaks. What else can I do.

Sounds as though your HE's are leaking and exhaust is coming into the car. I wouldn't want to mess with that if that is the problem. I don't know how you would check the inside pipes, you could place a CO detector card in the car, close it up and let it idle (without anyone in the car). Wouldn't take long to determine if you had a leak.

I wouldn't take any long trips with the windows closed.

You could try process of elimination, starting with a new gasket kit from the HE's to the muffler. Easiest and most inexpensive first.
If that doesnt resolve the issue, start removing the muffler system and HE's, with a whole fresh gasket set.
Be prepared to deal with broken HE studs...Thats the part widgeon13 said he wouldnt want to mess with. I concurr...

I suspect that you may end up having to replace the HE's.

triad west does not make heat exchangers. the final exhaust bolts to the heat exchangers

there was a company making some exchangers that were stainless but not ssis nor triad which is the common misconception.. My guess is that you have bad exchangers and you probably need new ones. don't go cheap but go with ssi. they will last forever
