73 RS Gearing...

The last auto x winner (july 16th, with THSCC) was driving a 73 RS.

My question is, how fast was he going to hit the 2nd gear rev limiter?

The fastest I could go was about 62mph on the same course, but I had just shifted into 3rd with an 8v 944 NA (on the last long straight, where he'd be pretty deep in 3rd). He could hit the limiter in second through the exits of some hard corners, where I would be at about 5800rpm or so...

Ahmet,

Here are the gear ratios for my Euro spec 1974 Carrera 2.7 as listed in the owner's manual. This car is mechanically identical to a 1973 Carrera RS Touring, save for the impact bumpers.

1st gear (11/35) = 3.182 : 1
2nd gear (18/35) = 1.834 : 1
3rd gear (23/29) = 1.261 : 1
4th gear (27/25) = 0.926 : 1
5th gear (29/21) = 0.724 : 1

These (MFI) 2.7 RS units rev out to a 7,200rpm limiter, but maximum power (210bhp) is reached at 6,300rpm.

As for the Auto-X winning 73' RS, I'm assuming the car is stock, but whether it is a stock Lightweight or Touring version, I cannot say! Yes, there were two versions of the 73' RS.

A stock 73' RS Lightweight is about 125kg lighter than the stock Touring version which weighs in at 1075kg.

Hope this helps.

I would suppose this car would've been the lighter version, since it had race tires, and wasn't driven on the street, well, rarely anyway (he said once to work, about every two weeks), than again, how would I know, I didn't ask for the specifics.

Now, I suppose I could compare his ratios to my car, and a few others I'd be interested in, however I don't have a gear ratio--> speed program right now (I used one off the internet, but it's been a while since than, and cannot find it/another one).

So my question now is when do YOU hit the second gear limiter (how fast would you be going, or how fast would one need to be going to hit it)? If you don't rev out the engine, I'm sure your owners' manual has this data.

Thanks a lot,

Oh, hold on, he said his car weighed right around 2200lbs! (I'm some 400lbs heavier! Damn those carreras, sweet car though!)

While we're at it, do you know 0-60, and hp #s? (is it different for the lighter version?). I'm going to be in an auto-x with this guy again on august 6th, I'm supposed to ride with him than, (and let him drive my car, see how much better he can do from me).

And just to let you know, this guy won the auto-x at the national level with a honda civic two years ago, and again with a 73 RS in canada last year, some talent!

How did you go at the auto-cross? I don't mean how competitive were you, I mean did you have fun - it was your first one, right? I have never been to one and they aren't so prevelant (sp?) here in NZ, but I seriously intend to when I have the chance.

Oh it was awesome, on my first run I was kind of dissapointed, since I got a DNF (did not finish), by missing a turn! (you're supposed to get there early to "walk" the course, extremely helpful, I had time to "run" through it once!

I highly recommend attending to one, great fun, and the best thing is, you get to explore/practice the limits of your, and the car's ability on a controlled environment, I mean tons of run off room, and I cannot think of a way you can possibly damage ANYTHING! This is ofcourse if your car's not falling apart! I also got to see/ride (and drive, but it was my friend's car) some awesome cars, among which were a 911 (not the winner RS), a viper (driver sucked, I don't like the car, nice experiance no less), a subaru wrx I think, and so on.

Anyway, I think I did great as well, the winner did the course in 45 secs, second place, c-4 vette, driven by club president managed around 50 secs, the above two ran race tires, and the vette was higly modified. If my dnf wasn't counted I would've finished 4th overall, and 2nd in my class C-street prepared). I came in at 53 secs. And 7th overall in the whole place, and I think 3rd or 4th in the "novice" class. Oh that dnf! I would've had a troph now!

I had favorable comments from many including the club president, who asked me which driving schools I had attended, and he was quite surprised to the reply of NONE, and even more so, after he found out I could manage better than 3/4ths of the people on my first "official" run of 54 secs. (the majority in the prepared class overall did around 55-60)

Ok, enough about me, I say you go to one, and watch, get a feel for how things go, and when you do attend one, make sure you walk the course, until you can actually picture every turn, in your head, sitting in your car! And while walking the course, make sure you think about just where exactly you'd accelerate, and brake. If there are optional slaloms, or turns (sometimes there are, meaning you can start/finish the "slalom" on either side), make sure you choose the one that better suits you. Porsches there almost always took the opposite direction compared to nearly everbody else, specially the front drive cars.

There's nothing to be afraid of, but I got quite nervous, since I was among only about 4 people who've never seen/done this type of thing, so I recommend you go and watch one first.

But overall, great experiance, one of my best spent weekends yet, and guess what, I'll do auto-xes as often as I can, my next only 10+ days away!

Good luck to you, let us know how you do/think!

Hey Cameron, if you really want to have some fun get down to Pukekohe with your mate Matt. I did a day at Manfield and it was just brilliant. Admittedly I did about 100kph off the track backwards at one stage, but I think every 911 driver should go off the track backwards at some time, if even just to be reminded you're driving a 911. I did the day at Manfield with the Jaguar Club who were a really nice bunch off guys and could really drive. The Porche club guys in Wellington are a bunch of wankers so I have stayed clear of them.

So my question now is when do YOU hit the second gear limiter (how fast would you be going, or how fast would one need to be going to hit it)? If you don't rev out the engine, I'm sure your owners' manual has this data.

Well, you hit the limiter at 7,200rpm. In second gear @ 6,300 - 7,200 rpm a standard, 210bhp RS would be traveling at about 67-70mph.

Oh, hold on, he said his car weighed right around 2200lbs! (I'm some 400lbs heavier! Damn those carreras, sweet car though!)

2200lbs = 997.92kg. Yep, that's either a Carrera Lightweight or a light Touring! You'll need to shed those 400lbs if you want to be any kind of threat to the Carrera!

While we're at it, do you know 0-60, and hp #s? (is it different for the lighter version?). I'm going to be in an auto-x with this guy again on august 6th, I'm supposed to ride with him than, (and let him drive my car, see how much better he can do from me).

Okay.

0-60mph (Carrera RS Lightweight) - 5.0 secs
0-60mph (Carrera RS Touring) - 5.5 secs

Standing 1/4 mile (Carrera RS Lightweight) - 13.8 secs

Standing 1/4 mile (Carrera RS Touring) - 14.2 secs

Damn! That car is way faster than mine (a stock US 944 has 143hp, does 0-60 in well into the higher 8.0 secs, and I think 1/4 mile at around high 15s), I wonder why we're both in A street prepared...

Oh well, he's a good 4 secs ahead of the rest of the competitors (in ANY class), so I suppose I shouldn't compare myself to him! That's what everybody else said!

If I remove any weight, I will be in modified! There, I either have to spend tons of money + time on the car, or I'll be thrashed by the 100lbs, 1000hp civic! (yes, sarcastic, but still) +this is a street driven car (but you bet it'll be auto-xed often).

Anyway, thank you very much for the data, that guy's got a fast, very sweet car, and undeniably high talent also!

I absolutely plan to get out there, but have some problems with my car at present.

Actually it isn't problems it is solutions - the glass is out, the interior is stripped - it is nearly ready to go in for derust and repainting!

Maybe after this weekend (it would have been weeks ago if I wasn't so slack) it will get into the shop.

Of course, I will post photos when it is done (in about 1000 years).

You don't have to go with your own car, infact I wish I could've gone there at least once before I raced my own car.

I'm sure somebody (likely a lot more than one) will let you ride in their car, or you might even get to drive someone else's car! (during the fun-runs that is).

The first time I went (just yesterday), I was quite surprised, and didn't really know what to do, but I still got the hang of it in jyst a little bit. But hey, save yourself the frustration, and get out without the 911. You'll see lots of nice cars run at their full potential! (THAT's what I call fun!)

I can try to scan a copy of the course, and directions to follow maps...

I can only say, my biggest mistake was not to do it earlier... That's honest, think about it!
