How hot is too hot

Well now that I have the oil cooler fan operating normal and a manual override switch installed on my 89 911. What are the temps I should watch for so I'll know when to turn on my manual fan switch on the oil cooler? I know which marks are what temps. Here in Texas in the D/FW area its now avg 100 degrees. Just a little help about what this car can tolerate. Thanks

Here in the WashDC area, I flip the switch when the oil temp exceeds 215/220. (83 SC with Carerra oil cooler and fan) With or without the A/C running in stop and go traffic, the temp typically drops and holds at several needle widths below 210. I am also running an oil cooler scoop but it appears to have little effect on oil temps below say 40 mph.

Sure,
From the bottom up, The bottom of the first white arc is 120 the top of the first arc is 180. Next arc 1/3 of the way up is 210 then 2/3s of the way up 250. Then the final red arc at the bottom is 300. Thats all I know and I found it all out at this site. By the way on my car some one told me about looking at your oil gauge from a angle and you can see some temp markings. He was correct but they are so damm small (and in degrees C and I don't know how to convert them to F). I can't read them. Guess its time for some glasses.

converting celsius to farrhenheit...i believe goes like this.

9/5 times degrees C plus 32...equals farrhenheit.

on my 84 911, the temp usually stays a hair below the 8 o'clock line and only moves above it in stop & go traffic. Is this good? I mean below normal or is it the norm?

As best I can tell today I had a good test. I drove 35 miles at 101 degress with lots of stop and go. While enroute towards the end of the drive temp hovered around 230 and I had the manual oil cooler fan switch ON. When I would stop the temp seeded to drop about 10 degrees. I think I might try the Pelican Oil Cooler Duct that goes in the place of the connering light on the right side. It might help while traffic is moving. Anyone got any data about the temp perf. on this unit while moving.

One thing I have noticed with my Carrera front cooler is the fan works against you at highway speeds, before I installed my fan my temps would really drop on the highway but not after unless I turn it off.

Guys,
I also put in a manual override switch to start the cooler fan. It works fine on my 87 Carrera but what I would really like is a thermostat that starts the fan at a lower temperature. Do remember a post where someone had gotten a Mercedes thermoswitch that fitted and started the fan at 210 degrees or something like that. Did connect with him but he had forgotten the part number. Would be nice.

There are a couple of different thermoswitches available from most of the Porsche suppliers ... for the electric radiator fans on the 924/944, and I believe the two operating temps are 186 F and 170 F.
