911 Heater Operation Questions
 

OK, I survived the summer after putting $1,900 into the A/C in my 1987 3.2 Carrera purchased in June. I just turned the heater on for the first time - clenching my teeth - hoping it would work. (PO had both footwell blower motors replaced) To my relief it did, but I have a couple of questions on proper function of the system.

My car is equiped with the Automatic Heater with the dial control between the seats. When changing from setting 6 (last white) to 7 (first red) and audible electric motor sounds similar to an aircraft cargo door closing and I assume a vent door somewhere is being opened. Changing to 8 and 9 it adjusts a little further each time.

1) What exactly am I hearing?
2) Where is it coming from?
3) Is this normal?
4) Can/should I do anything? (lubrication?)
5) Can I stop worrying now and enjoy a cold beer tonight?

1-6 should just be operating the heat boxes down by the heat exchangers. The electric motor sound you here are the operating levers. Your footwell blowers should also come on at different speeds at numbers 7-9.
