3.2 cold start control ?
My factory manuals are in storage at the moment and I have a question about the cold start controls on my '88. After repeated searches, I have come to the conclusion that my car has no WUR (?) and that the cold start idle is controlled by the Idle Control Valve (?).
When the car is stone cold, it requires throttle modulation to keep it running for the first 20 seconds or so. After this time, it will idle fine on it's own @ 800-900rpm. Any input appreciated, Sam.

The only warm up control is in the software and driven by the cylinder head temp sensor.
My 88 starts fine when cold but if I touch the gas for the first 10-20 seconds it goes nuts and almost stalls. A new sensor did not fix this. |

Just bumping some old threads that may have been answered/fixed. The solenoid in the ICV was not turning so I removed it and gave it a good cleaning inside, plugged it back in and could clearly see/feel it turning when ignition was turned on....car starts and idles perfectly and the whole project took 5 minutes and a couple of beers.

Yeah, I've been cutting down...I only drank one for removal and one for re-install....I did the actual repair on the "wagon".

If you suspect your ICV is not working it can be bench tested, see this thread:
Bench testing Carrera Idle Control Valve

Yes, your car has no WUR. This is a CIS part, which you won't find on a Carrera.
The Carreras use the so-called 'start control', which means the DME brain reads the temp from the CHT sensor and varies the pulse time according to what response it receives. The older sensors which ground through the cylinder head are problematic when the threads by which they attach become corroded. A later part uses a second dedicated wire to ground. If yours is the older type, think about upgrading. Search here for more info, and probably the sooner the better, ianc

I have had the same problem and it did not go away after replacing the CHT sensor last year. Start the car and it sputters for about 2 minutes on idle, then as I go down the street I have to be careful on throttle and shifting, as the car wants to try and stall. I have learned to live with it.
