Now I'm really dizzi
Friend has just bought a 1978 Euro spec targa SC. Engine was misfiring throughout the range as well as pinking. First item I went for was the coil to dizzi HT lead. Runs much better now. Does not misfire but it still pinks a bit in the mid range. OK so next check the timing. But where is the vacuum diaphram on the dizzi? No trace but I thought all these engines had them. Does not look like it ever had one either. If this is the wrong dizzi then it could have the wrong advance curve which could be making it pink. Bosch part no. is 0 237 303 003, I wonder what engine that relates to.

Carreraplanes,
"Two people separated by a common language." Hey, I know about torches - flashlights, lorries - trucks, spanners - wrench, bonnet - hood, etc. So what do you mean by "pinks" I'd say if the spark advances from 5 degrees BTDC to around 25/30 degrees BTDC, the dizzi is ok.

Thanks for looking in Doug. Sorry pinks is limey speak for detonation. Typical of an over advance situation.

Nothing else to do in the desert of New Mexico.
I'll add "pinks" to my list of words from the country whose language we Americans have "improved". Sounds like the distributor is a bit advanced. A timing light should show it. You do call it a timing light don't you? I still get emotional whenever I see an E-Type go by. Had a '67 roadster for a couple years. Just gorgeous under the bonnet. Miss the wire wheels. I miss everything about it except for the Lucas electrics. I used to hunt for Porsches on the back roads, no I am one.

Just saw a red E type in the centre of our village. Hood down, the weather's still good here for the time of year. Nice cars. Timing is about where it wants to be at idle. Still detonates. Dizzi looks wrong. Possible mis match here. All the 911s I had always had vacuum units on the dizzi and the SC is supposed to. that''s why I smell a rat so to speak.

Is the whole diaphragm (silver UFO looking thing handing off dizzy) missing or just one of the two vacuum tubes? The USA cars '80 and later have two hoses and the 78-80 and all Euro cars have only one hose.....but they all should have the diapragm UFO looking thingy

Thanks for chiming in Chris. No UFO sightings and I don't think they ever landed. e.g. no diaphram whatsoever and no sign of one ever having been located there. Like all UFO sightings - just plain wierd

Thanks for that Ron. So perhaps some do and some don't. I wonder if your dizzi is a 0 237 303 003 Bosch number like mine?
