popping noises and such

hello,
I've got two questions today.
1) I'm still getting popping sounds through the exhaust and sometimes through the inlet at idle. I've checked for leaks by spraying the carb cleaner and watching for increased revs and found none, I've balanced the carbs best I could at idle using a unisyn, put in new plug leads, set the timing and put in a new fuel filter. What else should I check to get rid of this problem??
2) I'm still having problems with my charging system. I got the alternator rebuild, it was fairly worn out, and I had them test the regulator and they said it was OK. I charged the two batteries up fully. The problem is I'm still only getting around 12.7 volts at the battery and it does not really change with increased revs, could it be the regulator?. I've got the motorola 14v alternator, do I need to upgrade, but it seemed to work ok for the last 30 years?
any ideas on these??
thanks

Regarding your alternator ... it is not supposede to change appreciably as your revs increase ... so, I suspect your alternator and regulator are working just fine. The Voltmeter you used may be reading a little low.

One way to confirm would be to borrow or use another Voltmeter and check the battery Voltage with the engine off first thing in the morning ... it should read 12.4 - 12.8 Volts with no load, then start up the engine and look for an APPROXIMATE 1 Volt rise when the engine is running with no heavy drain (headlamps or A/C) ... 13.5 - 14.5 Volts almost constant, with very little change over the rev range would be considered perfectly normal! Due to temperature characteristics of Silicon Rectifier Diodes, the Voltage measured when the engine is running will vary some with temperature ... higher Voltage in the early morning with cold engine and alternator, then 0.5 Volts or so lower in the hottest part of 100 degree F summer days!
