Porsche cranks but won't start
My '99 996 does not want to start. The engine cranks but nothing fires. Tried sraying starting fluid directly into the throttle body and still nothing seems to fire. I am looking for some help in diagnosing the problem. I am going to try a DME and Fuel pump relay but if that doesn't work I'm not sure on what should be checked next. Is there a way to test the DME module or maybe the timing chain? Any help would be appreciated.

Crank only a short time and let the battery and starter rest. Smell the tailpipe, if there's gas you got gas. Check the cap and rotor for good condition and mechanical advance(?-996 might not have it).
You can get a spark tester which attaches to a disconnected plug wire and grounds to the case anywhere to check for spark while cranking. Could also be the computer, or the crank(?)/cam sensor which lets the comuter know the engines moving and needs ignition, or a clutch engaged switch if it has one. The cranking should be fast and smooth and strong. Some ignition modules won't fire if they are getting less than 12V. Hope this helped, good luck.
