Heat Exchangers in an 80 SC?

The heat exchangers on my 1980 SC are pretty much shot. The pipes themselves are intact, but the shielding is rusted apart. As far as I can tell, there is no cat on the car--the existing exchangers empty directly into the muffler.

Obviously, I need to repair these, and want to keep expenses down. I know that I could do SSI exchangers, but am tempted to buy used OEM ones because they are far less expensive. What year exchangers will fit? Am I correct in assuming that '80 thru '83 ones will? Thanks!

I have a set in my garage from my 81. They are in good shape, I went to the SSIs. Located in the South Florida area

Eric, I just PM'ed you.

I also have an extra set. On my way to just headers...

But, its my second set. The first set I just made some 'OEM' headers by cutting off the heat exchanger tin. Took about 2 hours with the engine in the car using a cutoff wheel and some sheet metal shears. Dropped the engine temps by a noticable amount. My seat of the pants power meter didn't change.

I was in Somerville, MA, at the time and had driven deep into the fall. One day it snowed ;) I didn't really mind the lack of heat, but it would have been nice to have a defroster! ;) 911s really go in the snow... just dont try and turn!

If you can't find any near you or for cheap let me know. I'm also down here in FL.

Best regards,
Michael

Just to check with the collective wisdom of the board--I haven't found a source to tell me whether exchangers from other years will work on my '80 USA model SC. Will 80-83 work? Thanks

H.E. from other years....

Snowtire,

The 3-liter engines could use H.E. from other year SC models. But the '83 SC in particular uses thicker exhaust flanges but similar bolt pattern. So if you have thinner exhaust flanges in your old HE, your exhaust studs would be too short to bolt in the later HE's unless you install longer exhaust studs. Good luck.....
