Like most of you, I find the most frustrating thing is watching out for all the other drivers with their cell phones to their ear, and wondering if someone is going to merge into me, but I still would'nt trade the excitement and satisfaction of driving it. I also get a kick out of driving it to work with my work shirt on, (it has my name on it), and no I don't own the company.

I have my 914 for putting around town with the top off. The 911 is reserved for those 6 AM Saturday morning runs up to Stevens Pass or Snoqualmie Falls. I used to drive my old 911SC to work in Seattle traffic but stopped when my left thigh would no longer fit into the leg of my pants.

if i have a day that i dont need my construction truck, like i have an all day office stint planned i drive my 911 every chance i get. i love rolling around in that thing. shirt and tie is uncomfy, in whatever vehicle. i admit, getting a phone call, or trying to hear the radio is annoying, but other than that, it is a fine commuter.

I can't believe all you guys have to wear ties... I thought they were banned in California.

cantdrv55,
I know your feeling but I still love to drive my 911. Local street, stop and go tasks, yes don't like it that much but as long as a long freeway drive is a diff story |
I love the car - both. I just can't open it up as much as I want.
|
great problem to have. Just put a block of wood under the gas pedal and you can floor it all day long!

BTW...I drove my 930 everyday and loved it. I especially liked putting the top down for the drive home. It was like therapy for me. |
When I first bought my SC 4 years ago it was the with the intention to drive it everyday. Driven at the speed limit I didn't care for it that much, too loud, not comfortable enough, etc. Above the speed limit is where I love it. Alas I am slowly turning it into a track car.

Drive it every chance I get, need something from the store ..I go, sitting in traffic..no A/C..humidity beyond stupid..here I am (with a smile),
there is a nice stretch of road between traffic and work..she wails along happy. I drive my dream, and I'm quite sure that some commuters would trade places with me . ? ,when getting gas..how often do you hear or say..nice Maxima you got there. Rika |
Just drove in to work today. 11-12 miles from Pasadena to downtown L.A. Honestly, not much fun. I could never get past 3rd gear. I am short shifting into 3rd below 3500 RPM. Never a place to make JUST ONE run up through 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
I love my car but it is best for my late-at-night runs from my relative's houses out in OC up to Pasadena. I don't overdo it at all, I just "take the long way home" - run through Carbon Canyon, onto the 57 North up to the 210 Fwy and a straight run to East Pas. |
Owning a modded 2003 Cooper S and a 911 is like having a really cute girlfriend but for those extreme urges only a really slutty girl will do :)
Seriously, I traded a 2000 M-Coupe for the Mini when it came out because, as you said in your original post, puttering around in second gear in a hi-performance car all day can get boring. The S fills 90% of my automotive needs. When I felt the urge for performance again I picked up a cheap 911 (78Sc) which takes care of the other 10%. Ulrich |

In my case, my Dodge Ram QuadCab 4x4 is for my extreme urges; my restored 911 is my cute grifriend!:D |
I take mine on long 6 or 7 hours trips sometimes to races and such.
Its not bad, the only thing that gets me is that my left leg will fall asleep sometimes because the seat is hugging me. Around town, I find it frustrating that I have an expensive Alpine stereo setup and I dont listen to it, because I really enjoy listening to the new exhaust system that I put on. Mazda hasnt got anything on my ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM! |
the only thing that frustrates me is that I could never see beyond the car in front of me. So I pass only to end up behind one of those behemoths. I pass again and see open road then the smile comes back.

Suit & tie for most of 160K miles. Problem ? No.

I don't daily drive my car, but I do love tooling around town. I love being in it so much that I don't mind driving slowly. That said, I mainly take it out when I'm going to an autox, so I get my fast driving done there. Also, I don't think I've had a single person want to race me since I bought the car. Odd.
Now my Miata, that's another story. When there is nobody around, that is the greatest thrash-around car ever built. You couldn't break the thing, and it was like a tiny F1 car for the street. I could drive that at 9/10ths and nobody would even look at me, because at 9/10ths with 128hp, I'm still going pretty slowly. The problem was that driving slowly was BORING!!! Ugh. One of the reasons I got rid of my first Miata was that I was a reckless driving ticket waiting to happen. I slid the tail out pretty much on every turn I took! Ah, youth! |

Seriously, even if I can't push the car hard because of traffic there is always that guilty pleasure in looking at other drivers who are watching you. They all look so sad. Like life has passed them by, or worse, crushed them into road mush. And here are we, smiles on our faces sitting in our fabulous cars. Sometimes these other drivers glare at you in envy. But sometimes they smile remembering forgotten moments. It's our manifest destiny to help other drivers regain their spirit! They need to see our cars to bring back their youth. No wait. This was the commercial to introduce the Boxster a few years back. So to heck with the other drivers - I need to regain my youth & spirit. I'm going to go and sit in my car now. Even if she is parked in the garage. |
C.H. has fun on the roads, especially north GA mountain roads. :D
