paint code #
 

i have the paint tag/plate in my hand and
the only numbers i can make out are
8410-H. the car had so many layers of paint
i am not sure what color it was originaly
but i believe it to be a dark blue metallic.
anyone possibly have any info on the color?

5 gals remover/several trash cans full of
old paint/bondo later. at least it was cheap
and seema to run ok. still trying to get paint off weatherstrip and trim (smile face)

the code 8410-h was an optional color in 70-71 and was termed Metallic Blue specific for a Targa .THe H is for Herberts paint mfg if you can make out HL it would be Herbol paint mfg

I also have a 70 911E (mine's a Targa) that is 8410H medium metallic blue. I am finishing up a major restoration this summer. It was painted last month after a full strip to bare metal and a fair amount of body work/light rust repair.

The color is gorgeous when done well. There are lots of pics on my site -- and more to come soon. The shot below gives you an idea of the color. Note that I am not positive that we exactly matched the factory color, but this paint was mixed from the formula obtained from BASF Glasurit so should be very close.

That is a very nice shade of blue, very similar to the '78-'79 Petrol Blue on a Turbo I photographed for a friend ... the metallic 'flakes' component was a bit more coarse on the Petrol, but I think I like the results you got better!

Thanks for the kind words Warren. The metallic component of this paint is very fine, and the resulting appearance is a super-shiny blue. I really like it.

I'll be putting the rear body panels and bumper guards back on Saturday, and then maybe I'll tackle the doors. Getting REALLY frustrated that Autos Intl is taking SOOO long with my seats. Still need to get some new "Targa" logos for the targa bar before putting that back on. I've only driven the car 100 miles in the past year! Can't wait to get her back on the road. Real soon now...

btw the 83 944 painted dark gray metallic
coulda been better. i am going with white as
it would be easiest to paint, right? so far
the 63 bug white rustoleum was best. Just
too stubborn to get it done i guess. probly
more of a curse than an asset.

I dunno how anybody else faired but I could not get the targa off for the life of me. I removed all the hardware, and it wouldn't budge. I assume it must be glued to the car as well. I got scared to pry/hammer/beat/pray it off any more. I'm curious for an answer as well

Wow, I saw a 912 TODAY that color. It was a fresh repaint and it was beautus. Nice color.

Matt -- I didn't take off the Targa bar myself, but I'm putting it on myself so will "reverse engineer" the procedure. BTW this car had some pretty ugly 'swiss cheese' rust damage along the tops of the quarters, where the rear window trim and targa bar cover it up. Nasty...there are drains there that commonly clog up and the moisture gets trapped under the trim stuff and rots away the sheet metal. If you are painting a Targa (or a coupe for that matter) I strongly recommend pulling the glass and all the trim, and deal with whatever's underneath, otherwise you are asking for future problems w/ bubbles and paint cracking if not worse.

Anyways, I believe there are 4 bolts that go down through the rear quarters w/ nuts that have to be accessed via the wheel wells, plus some screws that go in across the top/front behind where that $180 targa rear seal goes.
