Solved ride height problem - sort of.

I've been having problems setting my front driver side ride height. No matter what position I try on the torsion bar adjustment lever it always returns to 24.5". I can set the passenger side fine and I've done it before so I am familiar with the procedure. I have checked the torsion bar splines, shocks, swaybars - everything sees fine.

In desperation - and there is no logical reason to try this - I put a 1/4" metal shim between the adjustment screw and the top stop. Voila, the ride height stays in place even after carefully driving down the driveway.

Now the question, what is the permanent fix? I am thinking about getting a used set of torsion bar, adjustment lever and screw. What else could be the problem? I am stumped.

If you just want to problem solve, couldn't you swap the torsion bars from one side to the other? Probably beats buying a used set.

My understanding is that you should not swap them - they are marked right and left.

Sounds like you need to reindex the adjuster cap. You are running out of adjustment range.

Chuck,
I had pulled the cap many times, tried setting it high and low with no luck. No matter where I set the cap the ride height would settle in exactly the same place. I even set the cap very high, giving me the max adjustment for raising the car. The adjsutment screw had no effect on the ride height of the car on that side.

I had no problems on the passenger side, as I said I have done this before with no problems. My first thought was that the torsion bar splines were damaged and the bar would rotate after the weight of the car would settle back on it. It's a mistery.
