911 Shifting Problem
Now that I've got my car out and driving (1977 911S), I have a shifting problem.
It's very difficult to get it into 1st and 2nd, seems to always want to go into 3rd or 4th. Once I get it into 1st, it will go into 2nd fine, and I can downshift easily from 2nd to 1st. Going 2nd to 3rd works fine also, although it seems I can never downshift from 3rd to 2nd. Sometimes going from 4th to 2nd works ok. Any guidance on the cause, and how to rectify? |
PS - its not that it's stubborn, but seems when I engage the lever to where 1st or 2nd should be, it goes into 3rd or 4th (usually).

You might want to do a search on 915 + shift + hard
I think you might find a few things ranging from tranny fluid to shifter couplings to rebuilding... |
I think you should try adjusting your linkage. It makes a big difference in my experience to have the linkage set up properly. Do a search on how to adjust the shift lever and see if that solves your problem before you start changing parts. You may need new bushings in the coupler. Good luck.

Yeah, that's all you need to do. First, get Wayne's book, 101 Projects. POC to get it adjusted so it will snick right in there. Just don't expect to be pulling any power shifts, especially from 1st to 2nd.

Thanks for the help, I've got the 101 Projects and a Haynes manual, but find 101 Projects to be much better. It's helped me out of many jams.

DM36415,
I had the same problem with my '77, 915. First thing before adjusting anything or replaceing anything, change the tranny fluid. This should be done on a regular basis anyway. Use Swepco and you will notice a big differance from the start. I had the same problems as you and changed the fluid and it was night and day. Tom |
