All of this is very interesting. I'm running 39 psi in the rear, is this near what you're running Harry? If I didn't want the tire to roll over I would have had to run almost 50 psi! When I ran 45 my times immediately came down and the back end would slip and slide all over the place.
I had the car aligned before the season (and lowered, corner balanced, etc.). I'm running (if I remember correctly) -1.5 camber in the rear; as much as we could get. What kind of pressure are you running in your ES 100s Harry? I will most likely go with Craig's suggestions and purchase the Hankook Ventus R-S2 Z212. They seem like a great tire and I don't drive the car in the rain. Thanks again everyone! Alan |
Good tires for sporty street driving - I wonder how they would hold up on track?
BFG TA/KD if you do much track work. |

I am running 39 psi in the rear and have about 1 to 1.5" negative camber. What do the inside edges of your tires look like? Are you sure your pressure gauge is reading correctly? I should note that prior to theYokos, I had Toyo Proxes H4 M&S Tires that came with the car when I first bought it. The Toyos had very soft sidewalls. I Drove them and Autocrossed them for 3-4 years prior to the getting the Yokos. I was running similar pressures and saw similar wear but did not have as aggressive an alignment. I also have a 19 mm rear sway bar in addition to my 19 mm front. What do you have? I am still thinking you have some other suspension issues you need to address. If it was me, I would have the alignment checked out. In fact, prior to getting new tires, you should address the entire suspension issue before you spend yet more money on tires and get the same outcome. Otherwise you will spend $4-500 and be no better off. Find a shop that spcailizes in setting up Porsches for the track and have them take a "look see". There may be another issue you need to address. If you were local to me, I would tell you to consult with Steve Weiner (he posts here). |

Am I mistaken that Alan has something else going on? Needing to run such high pressures leads me to think that he has some suspension issues that need to be addressed before he buys new tires. Otherwise, they will get trashed as well. |
Harry and Craig,
You bring up some very good points. I wonder if I do have something else going on. This will be my third set of tires in two years. The surface we AX on is very rough. Check out this pic of me earlier in the year. It's at one of our AXs. I should note, once I lowered it, balanced it and had it aligned I set WAY faster times at the AX (top five last time out). I run in AX13 and have stock everything. Bilsteins HD front, Sport rear. Running about .5 inches below Euro ride height. I do have a strut tower brace, but that's it. By the way, I'm runnign 6 and 7s. 205/55 front, 225/50 in the rear. I'm thinking of going to a 45 in the front.
Still looking for that good set of 8s!!! Alan |
Alan,
I have a stock setup except the 19 mm adjustable sways, Bilstein HD front/Sport Rears, lowered to 23/23.5 and a more aggressive alignment. My car was setup by Steve Weiner/Rothsport and the improvement was obvious. Get someone experienced to check it out. IMHO, the wear on your sidewalls is not acceptable and could be dangerous. |
Yeah, I'm inclined to agree with you Harry. I'll take it to another shop in Campbell I know of. Maybe they'll find something. It's just a pain in the rear end because I work so far away (an hour drive) and it's tough to get there during business hours.
I'll check it out because of your information and Craigs. Thank you again SO MUCH! Alan |
I think this is what Craig was trying to link:

emcon5,
Yeah, I like that article. I'll decide using this data. I was surprised about the Kumho tires, however given my recent experience I think I'll switch brands. Al |
I have Khumo as well and the sidewall is very soft. When I had Musante Motorsport completely update my suspension he said the tires definitely have to go to make the package complete. I was going to choose the King of Dry BFGood rich but opted to go with the Faulken Azenis. They are extremely popular with the Miata AX crowd. Some say its the stickiest tire short of a full race tire.

Hey Joe,
I'm glad to hear I wasn't the only one with that experience. I'm NOT going with the Kumhos again. WAY too soft. I'm still going to get my settings checked out again. I may go with the Hankook Ventus R-S2 Z212, however I'll check out the Faulken Azenis as well. Thank you, Alan |
Not sure what the Hankooks run but the Faulkens were only $74 per tire at Edge Racing.
|
Thank you Joe. I'll check those out too!
Alan |
allen,
What have you found out? |
Helly Harry,
Nothing yet. I've been looking for 8x16 fuchs first and have not been able to locate any. Once I have those and new tires I'll have the car corner ballanced and aligned. Thanks for asking. I'll let you know what I find... Happy Thanksgiving! Alan |
