Fuel Sender

My fuel sender in the top of the tank leaks. The prior owner had the tank sealed on the inside with some kind of polymer or resin type coating, and too much must have accumulated at the bottom of the tank beneath where the sender sits. Therefore the sender cannot properly compress the stock cork gasket.

Can anyone think of a workaround? The prior owner made a 1/2 inch cork gasket, but it ailed in short order. Any suggestions? Also, any recommendations as to a sealant/glue to use along with a gasket? Thanks.

The additional material is coating on the bottom of the tank - it's not reachable.
