Where is the Fuse for the Brake Lights?
My brake lights on my 911 quit working a few weeks ago and a couple nights ago I traced the wires to the brake lights and found a lot of corrosion where they were loosely connected. I forgot which wire went where and accidentally cuased two wires to spark when I attempted to re connect them. Now the wires have zero volts (as opposed to twelve volts before the spark). Where is the fuse for the brake lights?
One more question: I tested out the two brake switches on my 911 and they seemed to work well, but before I caused the two wires to spark I got this result using the multimeter: **Two wires (out of three) that were hooked up to be brake lights were always hot UNTIL I depressed the brake. Then I got a reading of zero volts. If I let off the brake, I would get a reading of 12 volts. Another observation: ***None of the brake lights work. I only tampered with one side, but both sides of the car including the third brake light on the turbo tail are out. Where is my problem?? TIA.

It's in the trunk on the drivers side with all the other fuses. I believe it is the same one for the cruise control.

Your problem may not be a fuse. The brake lights use hydraulic switches that are located in side of the master cylinder. The switches go bad. There are 2 and you should change them both. You will have to look at them on your car to verify if you have 2 prong or 3 prong before ordering new ones.

I have the 3 prong switches. Both switches show resistance when I checked for ohms though.

I've got a similar problem with my '86 coupe. The brake lights and cruise control don't work. I know they are on the same fuse, which leads me to believe therein lies the problem. However, he fuse appears to be good. Is there a relay that covers both items?

I may be wrong on this one... I had a problem with the brake lights not coming on until more and eventually even more pressure was applied to the brake pedal... Ended up being the brake light sensor switch? That would probably also be linked to the cruise control not turning off when applying pressure to the brake pedal...
Just my $.02

At this point, the cruise control doesn't work at all. Short of replacing the brake switch, is there a way to check the functionality (resistance or continuity) of those?

On an 86, the fuse for cruise control and the brake lights is #4 (in the center bank of fuses, counting from the end nearest the rear of the luggage compartment), which was blown. I replaced it and quickly had that fuse blow as well. I disconnected the connectors to the brake lights, (located on the engine bay bulkhead); the fuse blew again. Can I assume the problem is between the fuse panel and the wiring and not in the brake lights, or, could the brake switch at the master cylinder still be at fault? Any chance the relay for cruise control is causing the problem?
I'm no mechanic and no electrician, which begs the questions...what in the he!! am I doing here??? Thanks for your help. MK |
