Targa top x-perts, glue or no glue?
I'm fitting new top and headliner material from our host and was wondering if gluing either the top or headliner was okay, necessary, good, bad, wrong, etc...
Any advice or experience greatly appreciated! |
Glue
I replaced the top on my Targa a while back. I glued the leading and trailing edges down to the frame.
I first fitted the cover to the frame to make sure I had it square and to get a feel for how tight I needed to pull it (side to side). Once I had a feel for how tight I wanted it, I applied glue (gorilla or something similar, can't remember) to the inside of the leading and trailing edge of the cover (forms a pocket that fits over the frame). I then pulled it tight on the sides (go about as tight as you can get it when you lock the top in it's expanded position). This pulls the leading and trailing edge tight against the frame. I then used a buttload of small spring clamps along both edges to hold the material tight to the frame and let it dry. Turned out pretty good. Good luck, Gordo |
Thom Fitzpatrick, aka widebody, our resident fabricater and DIY modifier extraordinaire (except maybe for aero mods, someone else holds the title for those) has a great write up of his targa top restoration. You may want to check it out.

I recently did a Targa Top Rebuild .
I only glued the vinyl skin on the underside around the edges. By underside I mean, the interior side of the top. I used NO Glue on the part that would be visible from outside the car. So the glue would be applied only to the part that folds around the edges and is held by the clips and or the metal strips. It needs to be able to float on the foam lining. I used 3m Super trim adhesive, available at Advance auto parts. NOt sure if this is understandable, if you follow the link to my prior post it may provide a little more help...it's got pic's...... I took it apart almost a year ago and have kinda forgotten how it goes together!! thanks! |
I used 3M headliner spray adhesive on mine. It will sag in the middle if you don't glue

Send your top to Dan the Targa Man he does it perfectly. Put new bands, padding and burlap.
How are you going to keep the frame square after removing the covering? |
