Clutch pedal or cable problem, need info
Last week while rolling up to a stop light I put in the clutch there was a bang and the pedal went to the floor.
On first investigation I discovered the clutch pedal return spring was broken. Got this from Pelican and have just installed it. (I've installed according to the 911 workshop manual) The pedal is still all the way back. What should be pulling the pedal up? If I pull the pedal up to its normal position I can hear the clutch cable flop in side the tunnel. At the tranny side the cable is attached, the return spring on that end seems loose doesn't appear to be broken. Is this simply adjustment of the free play? The pedal would need to come up about 5 inches? Or is the cable broken as well? Thanks Jay

Probably a broken roll-pin that holds the clutch pedal to it's horizontal shaft. See if the lever in the tunnel (where the cable attaches) is on the same plane as the clutch pedal. If the pin has sheared, the lever will be to the rear and the clutch pedal to the front.

Thanks, I'll double check that. But it seemed ok (I'm also assuming you mean the lever will be to the rear (of the car) and the clutch pedal to the front (of the car)? I'm hoping I dont have to go to the pain of taking the belly pan off and pulling the pedal set.
I've also been searching, and I'm now wondering of the helper spring in the back has slipped. So that to check.

No the lever at the front of the tunnel that you can observe to the right of the gas pedal. Your helper spring just as it says "helps" the clutch it will work without the helper spring, just harder to depress.
As to fixing the roll pin read this tech article: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Mult_pedal_cluster/Mult_pedal_cluster.htm

I would start with checking that the cable moves. The cable release distance should measure ~25mm at the trans.
Your problem sure sounds like a broken shear pin at the pedal cluster. I bought a replacment pin at ACE hw for 27 cents. The pedal cluster is is bit of a pain to get out though . You have to first remove the belly pan and then free the throttle, brake and clutch pedals. There is not much room to work down there. It may also be worth for you to replace the pedal bushings. While you are in there it may be a good time for a new clutch cable aswell... The Bentley manual is a good reference it your gonna undertake these sorta things. jt -84 targa |

Kurt,
I confused you ![]() But the lever (to the right of the gas pedal) will be generally pointed to the rear of the car. Is that correct? Also, can the roll pin be broken in such a way that pressing the clutch will move the clutch cable slightly? As that is what I see, but there is hardly any tension on the clutch cable itself. If I pressed in the clutch pedal as far down as it is now I would imagine the clutch cable to be at its highest tension? Thanks

I'm excited, think I'm getting somewhere with this problem.
After fiddling with the adjustment at the tranny end to long, I finally decided to attack the pedal cluster. Monday night I got the belly pan off fairly easily, had dreaded that since the rear bolts hold the sway bar on. Then got the pedal cluster out. First thing I noticed, the plastic bushing for the clutch cable is cracked and deformed. A good sign. I then sprayed the roll pin with PBBlaster and let it sit (repeated a couple of times). Today I go home for lunch (after buying my new punch set) and drive out the roll pin very easily, it came out in 2 parts. The outer layer split in half lengthwise, again a good problem to find. Now to take the cluster apart and rebuild. I've sprayed the clutch pedal with PBB, it didn't want to come off the shaft yet. Is there anything special I need to get this off or just pull? Jay
