I had one years ago that was almost the same. The side bolsters were vinyl and the seat and back cusions were cloth. It was an original factory installed seat in a 73 911tST Monty Carlo rally car. It had provisions for using the stock headrest built into it. That's all I know about the seats, hope it helps -

Eric,
Here are Scheel 914 GT repro seats from a few angles. Look to be similar. http://www.pbase.com/9146gt/scheel_racing_bucket_seat_reproductions

I don't think these are Repo's as they have "patina" to them....
What ever it is.. whether it be RECARO/SHEEL it's an old seat... just trying to get some back ground on it.. Thanks guys.. who knew it would be so hard to track down info on an old seat .... not me that's for sure.. ![]() Thanks again.. Eric

Eric,
It is almost positively a l60s-e70s Recaro race bucket seat [300 Model]. Look carefully at the basic fiberglass seat. Shape of the side bolsters, angle of the back, inside width. It is NOT a period Sheel. Their one piece seats were of very lightweight construction. They did make a HD bucket but it was a rallye seat and had an adjustable clamshell backangle, somewhat like the "RSR Recaro" but wider and had a screw turned handle rather than turnbuckle adjustment. The period Sheels, imaged above, are similar but have an extrememly vertical back angle, to make clearance. Look at the back angle of the Recaro Model 300 and notice how much it is raked back. There was a Recaro "Race" bucket and "Rallye" bucket. The race bucket, which I am certain this is, has a tight seat-width and high side bolsters. The rallye bucket has wider seats and much lower side bolsters. I can say all this with certainty as I have owned various combinations of these seats for decades. I have a matching set of Recaro Race/Rallye seats in my 73 now. I have a virtually new Sheel 911 race seat stored along with a set of Sheel 914 race buckets. I have bought and sold the Recaro RSR seats [too tight for my big a...]. I may seem to pontificate but I have a lot of personal contact with them and it is easy to spot the distinctions once you know what to look for. [And NO, nothing for sale.. tho I keep promising that I will starting cleaning out my storage.] Hope you enjoy that seat! |

I'm voting Scheel's. Here's a set I recently picked up, they were recovered at some point. These are 15 pounds each.

I just found this old thread and thought I would update for vintage seat geeks.
I ended up buying this seat from Eric. It is indeed a Scheel......I know this for sure, because I have it bolted next to my original upholstery Scheel model 400 in my 70S. Beneath the upholstery they are identical. I am looking for anothe rif anyone has a line on one. TIA, Dave

Can you give me any measurements on these (width of the bottom of the base, width of the widest part of the base, width of the back and height). And what sort of money do they usually run. I'd like a better seat for my miata, but the stock 80's style porsche seats besides being heavy are probably too tall. These look short and relatively supportive.
Oh, and does anyone make a similar seat that's new and not $3000 because it's a rare original? Thanks

Dave,
Do yours have the black fiberglass (painted or gel I don't know) or are yours the natural fiberglass?

Anyone have a pic of those early 911 rally-type passenger seats? I'm speaking of the ones that were seen in 356's- look like nothing more than a tiny fiberglass shell sans any padding whatsover...usually in a tanish color.
