Thumbs up All metal air box

My '74 Targa has an all metal (aluminum I think) air box made by Webbs Machine Design in Clearwater, Fla. It was on the engine when I bought the car and from my research the 2.7 seems to be the original. Is this a good thing and what about the spring adjustment on the airflow plate (where a pop valve would be installed) at the bottom of the box. Any info would be graet.

These are very nice airboxes with a good "flapper' design.

These work better than the stock boxes, I have been trying to get a hold of one for a 79 Sc, Webb sold the tooling and dies to another shop and I am waiting to here if they are willing to make me up a new one for my new SC turbo engine. They sold thier pop valves with different spring pressures to allow the use of a turbo. I am interested in purchasing a used one if anyone has one for sale...

Stainless steel? Isn't that a LOT heavier than the stock plastic box? Wouldn't aluminum have been a better choice of material?

Thanks for the info. The pic is exactly what I have on my 74 targa. I assume that on a stock jetronic system, the pop valve would need to be in the normally closed position opening only if backfire occurs.

You know the funny thing is my stock 74 2.7 had an aluminum airbox in it with porsche satmapings etc. I can imagine what it would cost to make that box out of stainless. I would 4-5 hours in welding, tacking etc.

A few months ago, iamchappy posted a pic of a Webb air box. I have one on a stock 2.7 1974 Targa and I have a question. When I have the air box cover off, start the engine and advance the throttle, the metal spring loaded plate lifts. Is the plate supposed to lift under normal acceleration or lift only if a backfire occurs? Are the springs too weak? Do I have a valve/head gasket problem causing back pressure? Any advice would would be appreciated.----------Thanks

Clark, I ran across this new one for sale for anyone else that may be interested in the SS air box.
The plate should only lift on a backfire.

Yep, that air box probably werighs at least 2 pounds more than the plastic version and about 1 pound more than the aluminium version, which would be more prone to cracking unless it was thick, then to would be heavier. big woop

I've talked to the builder of the boxes, he claims they flowed better and provided better performance. He built the air flapper with heavier springs for turbos and had them set up like the BAE blowoff and had different
springs for different boost pressures.

No, Webb sold the dies to another guy who would still make them for the right price. There are a few of them around I know Henry from Supertech has one, and Bontempi claims his is still new.

This is an interesting thread...I have one of these SS boxes. It was on my '74 when I bought it years ago, and the only other one I have seen was also on a '74. I guess there were a lot of folks cracking their boxes early on when the CIS cars began to show up here. If it would help anyone I would be glad to take and post some detailed pics of mine.
