Any feedback on Toyo Proxes T1R's?

Hey Guys,

I recently purchased a set of 951 8" Fuchs for the front of my sled so I need to get some new tires for them (as well as for the almost worn out 245/45's for the 9" rears).

I will be running 225/45's in the front, which limits my tire choices signficantly. It's my daily fun car so treadwear/longevitiy and tire noise are just as important to me (if not more so) than grip...

I currently have 205/55 & 245/45's Yokohama ES100's on 7's & 9's respectively. They work just fine for what I need them for so I am inclined to run them again, just upgrading the front wheel/tire sizes in the process...

There are only a few manufacturers making 225/45's other than Yokohama with their ES100's, and Toyo is one of them with the Proxes T1R. The specs seem comparable to the ES100's and the prices are comparable as well.

Anyone use the Proxes T1R that can share their experiences?

Please don't try and sell me on other brands or using a 225/50 in the front as an alternative, my mind is already made up, I'm either retaining ES100's or switching to the Proxes T1R....

Thanks in advance!

Ralph

I have them on the 993 and like them. I've only put about 1500 miles on them but they are not loud and seem to not wear down too fast, AFAIK. They sure were a better deal than the Pzeros I had replaced a few times.

I have a set on my car for about 3000 miles through engine breakin and club drives. I had Yokohama's on there before that wore like iron but didn't have much grip. The T1R's are excellent gripping and smooth running on the carrera. The twisties seem much, much tighter on these.

I had a set on my 914, and even in heavy snow, they amazed me. Dry, I thought I could drive up walls they had so much traction.

I have t1r's and they are certainly twice the tire that es100's are.
Having said that I feel they are lacking a little dry grip. But excellent in the rain. If you take a good look at the tread you will see a lot of space between tread blocks. As a street tire they are a good choice.

Ralph: Out of curiosity, why the 45's in front? The 245/45 in the rear and a 225/50 in front are pretty close in diameter to stock 16" diameters...

I know you said no selling, but by insisting on the 225/45 on the front, you're making yourself miss the boat on a much finer tire, IMO. The Goodyear F1 GS-D3 is what I run on the street, it is the best street tire I've ever driven on. They are also mind-blowing in the wet.

PS-I had the Yokos on mine when I got it, and felt that the Bridgestone S-03 was a big upgrade. The Goodyear is that much better than the S-03. A lot of my evaluation was at the track on all 3 of these tires, prior to going to MPSCs for the track now.

Thanks for the feeback thus far guys, it is appreciated...

Ed, I had S03's on the car before the ES100's and they are indeed a much better tire with respect to grip, but they wear out quickly and the price tag doesn't help. For my daily driving and what I use the car for, a lower budget tire is fine. Comparing S03's to ES100's is apples and oranges (like a 3.2L vs. 3.5L) and isn't a fair comparison imo...let's just say the guys on our SOCG drives aren't exactly leaving me in their dust with their fancy rubber...

Don't care about the wet traction, it never rains in Southern California...

I perfectly realize that using a 225/45 size limits my tire brand choices (see my initial post) but the slightly lower aspect ratio may give me that much more clearance for the 8" wheels. I've test fitted one of them on the rack with a "dummy" tire mounted and "think" I may get away without having to trim the fender wells...I am trying to do any compensation with alignment settings and ride height if possible...

Any more T1R guys with experiences, good or bad?

Ralph

Ralph, I run the same tires and rims you are talking about. The 45's up front where definitely needed. I tried 225/50's and the clearance was poor. I use S03's for the small amount (less 1000mi/yr) of street driving I do.

I use TR1 225/50/16 in the front with 8 inch 951 wheels, I had problems with clearance, had to roll the lip on the fenders and there is a slight rubing while trying to make tight turns like when parking. Also changed the ride height, had to increase by about 1/2 inch.
I have not tried the 225/45/16 probably they have a little more clearance.
In the rear 245/45/16 9 inch wheels no problem.
Great dry grip, mine have a 40 treadwear, these do not last too many DEs. The new specs for these tires have a 100 treadwear, probably these will last longer.
Noise not a problem.
Alignment set to:
Camber -2 Front and rear Toe in 5 minutes.

I had a set of T1S (predecessor of the T1R) then switched to Yoko ES100s since I hear lots of good and then switched to T1Rs. I usually wear tires until they are nearly bald. I replaced the ES100s when they were only 1/3 worn. I hated them compared to the T1S, and the T1R's are even better than the T1S were.

ES100, poor grip compared to T1R
T1R slightly softer sidewall than ES100
T1R spectacular wet grip

WHen I had the ES100s they actually wore worse than the Toyos because they didn't have enough grip to take advantage of my camber. The ES100s were wearing very unevenly. Instead of gripping and allowing the car roll they just slid. The Toyos grip like mad and are wearing evenly.

I don't see myself ever buying another set of ES100s, but I've got T1Rs on two cars in the family.

I had the T1-R's in the size you have. I replaced ES100's.
The size is restricting on your choices. I went with the T1-R's
just to see what else was available for that size. I liked the tire,
for the money, and for a street tire it works really well. I just
bought my second set for my nw car with 17's... really like 'um
I got mine from www.edgeracing.com good prices, fast shipping.

With the 8" 951 fuch and a 225/50 tire you will be limited to a little higher ride height. Next street tire I get will be the 225/45/16 fronts.

I too am looking at the Toyo T1-r's after finding out the Yokohama has discontinued their AVS sport in the 245/45/16 config and because of my 3.4 my back tires are getting a little bald...

I am also looking at the Hankook VENTUS RS-2 Z212

anybody know these guys? http://www.tireseasy.com/

I have T1-Rs in 225/50 and 245/45 on my 87 Carrera. Good bang for the buck. Got a set for my Bimmer as well. Not a real R-compound tire but provides plenty schtick on the track (for DE). Good in the rain as well
Highly recommended ;-)

I have them and they seem to stick just fine. They came with the car, so no real frame of reference for comparison.

Guys, thank you very much for your opinions and impressions. It seems that the TR1's are on par with (or exceed) the ES100's as a good tire for the price...

I don't have any real complaints with the ES100's, they did what I asked of them, but am willing to try something different...

If I slide off a cliff I'll have all you to thank...

I bought my T1R's from these guys. They had the best price at the time.

Maybe I'm used to the RA1's, but they feel a little squirrely to me. I went with 215/45-15 and 225/50-15 on 7&8x15 Fuchs. I thought the 225/50-15 on front and rear would look funny with the front tire being taller because it is on a narrower rim. Next time I would get 225 all around because the 215 is too short and just lowers my car too much for the street. Live and learn....
