stuck in 5th gear
Took my recently acquired 86 3.2 Carrera out for a blast this afternoon and twice when it had been running in 5th for a while it refused to change down, though it did whith force the second time this happened.
I am pretty sure it's not the clutch as the pedal was on the floor and I have not experienced any dragging of the clutch at other times - the cluch is ony about 20K old. Gear selection at other times has been fine - though first is sometimes a bit sticky to engage. Is this common? Is it likely to be worn syncros, shift out of adjustment or some other possible cause. Any advice would be helpful. |

That 5th gear is way up front in the 915, and the 'slider' that engages the synchro hub teeth is up high and susceptible to a low oil level, so you might want to check the level pronto! If you haven't changed your gear oil, plan on doing so, soon, especially if it appears dirty or low.
You may want to do a search for archived threads pertaining to '915 gear oil,' '915,' or 'gearbox oil change,' etc. to get familiar with the subject. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |
