How do I remove the relays in the engine compartment?

Hi there,

I'll try this again......I'm trying to replace the relays in fusebox in the engine compartment. I have an '85 targa. I just replaced the fuses, which were obviously original as they nearly crumbled when I pulled on them.

Anyhow, there are two relays I want to replace there, but can't seem to get them out. Are there any bolts underneath that I'm not aware of? I tried to pry them out with a flathead screwdriver and twist, but they aren't budging.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks,

Pry them up a little and spray release-oil under.
The pins may be corroded.

They should just pull out. Are they rusty?
Maybe post a picture of them?

Hi,

Thanks fellas......no, they don't appear to have rust on top, but that doesn't mean they aren't corroded on the pins. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anthing. I'll go back and twist away.

Best,

Ian,

Nice shot there. What is the relay for? I thought it was for the heater fan, but after searching our host, there is no heater fan relay. I'm guessing the rear defrost relay?

Best,

But . . .

I saw your other thread. Have you checked the main blower to see if it works?

In a nutshell, you turn on the switch, it fires up the main blower. It sends a signal to this relay & this relay turns the footwell blowers on. But if your main blower is not working, this relay won't trigger. Whether it is good or not.

What is your root problem? And what have you done to troubleshoot?

Ian

Hi Ian,

Thanks so much. Your input is great. As far as troubleshooting, the fan is not running, so I have no heat. I planned on swapping the relay, but for that price, I'm certainly open to testing the fan unit itself. I'm not too sure how to go about that. I can get under my car very easily if that helps.

Thanks,

I have an 87 cabriolet, and I have a defroster relay and defroster
switch! I couldn't figure that out until one day I turned on the defroster and burnt my finger on the outside rear veiw mirrow.
anyone else with a cab and heated rear veiw mirrows?

To test, you have to put a 12V line + & - from your battery to the terminals on the blower fan. Unplug the black bakelite connector top left side of blower. It is 2 wire - brown is ground. Connect your battery wires carefully & the fan will run if OK. Disconnect your battery first as always.

Of course there is always the heater backdate mod!
Help! Does anyone understand the footwell blower circuit?

Ok,

Just picked up some wire and testing clips. I'll give it a shot......Ian, thanks so much for the direction. Hopefully can give it a try in the next day. Do I need to take anything off other than the fan's connector top?

A mirror will be helpful because you can't see the terminals. And don't forget to disconnect the battery! Otherwise your wires could become little arc welders. Only half joking here so please take it seriously . . .

Mysterytrain

I'm certainly leaning towards backdating. I'm getting tired of removing the snorkel for every job. Just have to get those footwells in order. Well, I'll have all winter to think it over . . .

Ian,

In your diagram, there appears to be a white wire....is that the positive? The other lead is under the housing?

Sorry if I'm not sounding clear.

Thanks,

Ok,

Ian, here is the outcome. I unhooked my car battery. Then I hooked up wires to the battery terminals. I gave them a little tap together and got the small spark I was hoping for.

Anyhow, I got the "coupler" off of the fan cover, and with the mirror, I could see two leads into the housing. Kind of like a 2 pronged fork, right? Anyhow, I managed to wedge the mirror for a perfect shot. I held the wires to the prongs.........nothing. I switched the wires with contact.........nothing. So, I guess the fan is out?

If for some reason I haven't replaced a fuse properly, and I'm pretty sure I did, the fan would still run.....correct?

I'll go back to your other post regarding the fan exchange. If all goes well, you have saved me a pretty penny.

Please advise. Also, my email is jbripps@aol.com.

Best,

Hi Ian,

Well, just got a fan in that I bought from a fellow Pelican. I swapped out the fans. Before I bolted it in, I turned the key and crossed my fingers, then I pulled on the heater levers............and the fan came on! I can't tell you how excited I am. Thanks everyone for your help and thanks to Dan Heinrichs in Sunnyvale, CA of RMG for supplying the part!

I love a thread with a happy ending.

Best,
