915 Gears
Are 915 gears for 4th & 5th interchangeable?
Can I use a tall 4th for 5th gear or a short 5th for 4th gear?

Only 3rd & 4th are interchangeable in the 915.

915 gears for 3 4 and 5 are the same. They use the same spline on the fixed gear and the same bearing on the rotating one. I just checked the tranny I have apart to be sure and 4th slides on the fifth pieces. Check out Carquip website: http://www.carquip.com/parts/911/trans/gears/915gears/3rdgear/index.asp and you'll see many of the 4th gear sets offered as fifth gear sets.

I'd take another look. Your 915 5th fixed gear has an entirely different spline than 3rd & 4th fixed gears .... and last time I checked, the helix angle on 5th idlers is opposite that found on 3rd & 4th idlers.
Many low ratio 5ths have the same tooth counts as tall 4ths ... that doesn't mean they interchange. |

You are correct. I thought I had a 4th gear "SN" set and tried it on the tranny I have on the bench, but it turns out to be a fifth gear set. There are a few other differences so I stand corrected. Thanks, I learned something today.
