Question Hello and 911 wiring help

Hello everyone… I have been lurking and reading for a bit, and in fact have really found a great deal of help in the postings. My research here has been on issues with my (new to me) project car. I am hoping it is not more of a project than I can handle. But I have wanted this car since I was a kid, so I am tackling it come hell or high water.

The car is a 1975 911 chassis, with a 1996 993 engine and body. Tranny is a 915, but appears to be later 70’s. It appears that the wiring may not have been done as well as it should have been in conversion.

The turn signals don’t work, and I am trying to track the issue. But I am running into some strange symptoms. Here is the run down on it, any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Headlights, running lights, and brake lights all are functional (all 993).
Back up lights are non functional.

I suspect the wiring to the fuse box has been altered, but Fuse box shows #8 as “Turn signal and back up lights”. This has 12v.
It shows #9 as “Blinker light front left” and #10 as “Blinker light front right”, these 2 have no voltage at all regardless of ignition state.

With ignition on, if I jumper 12v to #9 or 10, they will show a constant 12 volts at the turn signal bulbs. All bulbs light up except driver side rear, even though it has 12v to the bulb. The bulb works when put in the other side though, so this is confusing to me. If both rear signal receptacles are getting voltage, why will only the passenger side light a bulb?

To add to my confusion, if I turn the ignition off, and turn the signal switch to left, all the left side running lights come on, turn the signal switch to right, and all right side running lights come on…

I should note that there is no voltage at all to the turn signal relay.

Other questions:

For my BMW, I swear by my Bentlys manual. But I cannot seem to find one for the 1975 911, or the 1996 911 993. Did they even print them? If not, what is the next best?
I have the Haynes for the 1975, but so far for most things it is as useless as an ass flavored lollipop…

Lastly, are there any 911 gurus in the Tampa Bay area?

Thanks for taking the time to read this (hope it's not too long), and forany suggestions you guys may be able to offer!

Sorry about the poor pic quality... I think the auto resizing fuzzed it up a bit.

An SC bentley manual will be able to help a lot with your car. Not too much changed between the years.

Sorry I can't help with the wiring.

Thanks Rich, I wondered about the SC book. I think I'll give it a try.

Is the wiring from the '75? If so, the Haynes book should be helpful... I used it when I rewired my '75. In my case I removed all of the wiring and made custom harnesses, but I used the schematics in the Haynes manual as reference. To make the dwgs easier to read, I enlarged them on a photocopier.

Between the Haynes and an SC bentley, you should be able to trace all wires related to turn signals. There is at least one relay involved in getting those to work properly.

You may have to check all wires/crimps, and all bulb sockets. Obviously chech both for 12vdc and groud, as a bulb won't light without both.

The deal with ignition off is typical for many German cars... "they" say it is to help find your car in a parking lot. I have had many Porsches and BMWs that work that way.

You might want to contact your PCA region's officers to find shops/gurus in your area.

As Mike said it is normal for the turn signal lights to stay on when the ignition switch is turned off, both of my cars do this.So this tells me most of your turn signal circuit must be working try some easy things first like the flasher unit .Another funny thing I found on my 76 was the park lights on the right side do not burn with the ignition switch off.But according to the schematic this is correct.

Mike, Thanks for the input. It is the 75 wiring with the newer stuff spliced in. I suspect it may be a ground issue, but tracking it is a PITA.

Lester, it isn't the turn signal lights that come on with ignition off, it is the running lights. Signals only come on (solid) when jumpered at fuse box.

Victory!!! I have turn signals! Poking around under the dash I found one wire pinched through, and an entire harness plug unhooked and taped up under the headlight switch. Turns out it is the harness going to the signal relay... that would explain the lact of voltage at the relay. Also, there was a bad ground at the rear left signal bulb. All is well now. Thanks guys. Now, On to the next mind bender...
