boge struts and shocks

The shock tube on my left front strut broke just above the spindle. I have no idea why it happened. Just noticed some difficult handling while at Infineon Raceway. Struts are not modified. Pure stock. Boge.

Any idea as to why this happened would be great. No trama to the strut.

An now the 2nd question. The struts have an external thread and cap. I believe the strut is an 86-89 Carrera? I need to replace the strut on the left side and am having trouble finding one. The insert (Bilstein) is matched to my torsion bar (23MM) via Smart Racing products.

Will this insert fit into an earlier inside thread 3.5" strut? Are the earlier 3.5" struts the same as the later outside 3.5" struts except for the retaining caps?
