Help: Windshield seal & trim
 

I recently replaced the front windshield on my 84 Carrera myself and found out that it is very difficult to put the trim back to the seal. Can anyone help and suggest a way to put these things back? Ive tried to insert the trim in between the seal openings where they belong but was unsuccessful. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry, unfortunately you need to put all the trim on before you put the window back in.

It is much easier that way, some may say otherwise, but I think that there will be allot of swearing and possibly a new window involved if you don't.

Go back in time on this bulletin board, to a thread entitled "Silicon." I believe it may be on Page 3. I asked a similar question and many responses were received (thanx H2O911 and others).

Today my car has the seal but not the trim pieces. My windshield guy knows I want the trim pieces installed. The Haynes manual suggests that the trim goes in last. Folks with practical experience seem to insist that the trim and seal and window go on as a unit.

I'm just back from a few days out of town, so our dialogue is likely will resume now. I suspect that re-installation will be difficult now because of the goop that was used between the seal and the car. That is, if the trim cannot be installed without removing the windshield.

I am one of those who insist the trim be installed before the windshield is installed.

I did this on my '85. It looks better than before I took it out. Regarding other projects, the looking better part, has been rare. ;-)

I called a glass place that the Tacoma Porsche place sends their jobs to. they've done a lot of them. I also looked more carefully at the Haynes procedure. I'm convinced. The aluminum trim ("bezel" in Haynes-talk) MUST be in the rubber gasket, along with the windshield, when everything is installed.

This means my glass guy MUST remove the windshield in order to complete the installation. So must you. Not good news for either of us.

But the guy(s) who knows insist that you will mangle the trim badly if you try to install it afterwards, and you probably will fail anyway. I believe this now.
