'84 911 value questions

I think I've got mom talked into selling her '84 911 TL. Its been sitting for 18months now, probably needs a trans rebuild (2nd gear went AWOL).

Car is a '84 911 wiht the factory turbo look option (M491). One of 420 made that year, just over 1k total made in 5 years. Needs to have the trans fixed, probably a going over/tune up since its been sitting, needs seats and dash recovered (tear in seats bad wrinkles in dash), could use paint but it looks good from 10 feet.

Whats it worth? I know these cars in excellent shape go for close to $30k, and I figure fixing everything would take 10-12k. Would we get more by having the trans rebuilt and then selling? Or rather, would we get more than sitting value + rebuild cost?

In the condition you describe, non-running with bad tranny and interior, fair paint and who knows what else, $10K sounds a little pricey. Fixing it up is probably not going to get you more than another $4-6K, even if it was really well-done and complete, and you can't fix it for that.
Turbo-look will push your price a little higher, but if it can't be driven, it would be hard to evaluate fairly and justify a higher price.
Here's my take: Sell as-is - $8-10K; fix tranny so it can be driven - $10-12K; fix tranny, go through engine mechanicals, fix interior - $12-14K. To get $16K or more the car is going to have to be very well-sorted.
I don't think a turbo-look would get $30K unless it was absolutely cherry, original or very updated. You can get a real 930 turbo for that. Others may disagree.

I think Joe gave a realistic evaluation.

It is a good looking car and a very nice color, paint may not be as bad as you/I thought. Fix the tranny and sell it for the best return.

I would say more pictures and a better description of the issues are needed for a better valuation.

Does the engine start and run OK?

How many miles are on it?

Any records?

Any rust?

Any upgrades?

Assuming the car was parked due to the transmission..correct?

Any other non functioning electricals or problems?
