Goodbye Carerra, Hello 993 w/ pics
Tuesday afternoon , I dropped off my Silver 87 Carerra at DAS for shipment to sunny California. We could not have picked much worse of a day to ship the car since it rained all day and traffic was horrible. My previous nights car detail went to waste as soon as I left the garage.
Wednesday morning, I left my house at 4:00 am to pick up a buddy and go the Nashville airport. Our destination was Baltimore, MD via a 6:15. Specifically, we were headed to Turbo Performance Center in Jessup, MD to pick up a car that I had found on cars.com and was listed in the Washington Post. The car's owner picked us up at the airport to take us to TPC where we car was given a oil change and inspection. Upon arriving at TPC, we were greeted by an extremely freindly group of guys and a beautiful red 993 sitting outside the shop in the pouring rain. After an inspection and test drive, check and title changed hands and we were on our way back to TN. The first 20 miles and 1.5 hours of the trip were horrible with bumper to bumper traffic and rain. After that, we had absolutely smooth sailing for the remaining 700 miles of our trip home. Back home and rested, I am happy to report that this car is amazing and far exceeds my expectations. The car was built by TPC in 99 to showcase their Supercharger kit and at the time of the build had 21k miles. It has been in Excellence and European Car and was at 28k miles when sold to a TPC customer in 01. The car was sold again to another local customer in 04. If you do the math, you will see that the car has traveled 3k miles in the last 5 year. On the 700 mile trip home, I can not tell that it consumed any oil. The motor never smoked nor did I head any detonation. The 3.6 has never been opened up according to TPC and is 100% stock. Here are some of the mods on the car. If anyone has Excellence or European car from 01, I would love to have a pdf of the articles. TPC Supercharger H&R Coilovers Brembo brake upgrade (GT?) I hate to say it, but I think I like the silver Carrera better - what kind of mirrors are those? Both beautiful cars, BTW.
Regards,

Both cars have 993 mirrors.
I did really enjoy the silver car but wanted something that I could use on more of a daily basis with more modern AC and heat. Plus I love the lines of the 993 and really missed having something with forced induction. I count myself as very very fortunate for having stumbled across the car at a price that was no more than I would have to pay for a stock 993 with 31K miles. Two days before picking up this car, I test drove a stock 95 993. That car was faster than my Silver 911 and more refined but didn't really do it for me. I would of had to change the suspension, wheels/tires, and exhaust immediately to make me happy. In no way was that stock car worth double the price of my Silver 87 IMHO. No the Supercharged 95 is a totally different animal. It has lots of torque throughout the powerband with a nice steady pull all the way to red line. Also, at full throttle the supercharger sounds like a police siren. That takes some getting used to... In case you are curious, they saide that the car currently makes 360 - 380 flywheel hp but there is another 60-80 hp on the table with a liquid/air intercooler, their newest uni-chip software, and a 6lb supercharger pulley (5lb on the car now). I would love to see the Excellence article. If someone could rescan it for me, I would greatly appreciate it or if its online, point me to the link. I have looked myself but can't find it. |

Was this the 993 that had 'Supercharged' across the rear fenders at some point (I'd assume it was for marketing purposes)? Beautiful car! I'm sure it's a blast!
I'll have to look for the article! I'll post if I find it... Mike

I'm think of the same change from the Carrera to a 993 for the same reasons, but just can't convince myself sell my "first Porsche". I even have my wife's approval...
