question on an Ignitor installation on a '75 911?

Hello all,
After owning my 911 for a couple of months now I've decided to go to the Ignitor system and do away with the points. I received the ignitor system today and it looked pretty straight forward. The points removal and installation of the ignitor system in the distributor is pretty straight forward.
My question is in looking at the options for the wire attachments, I'm not sure exactly what system I have. I'm wondering about the ballast resistor. Also my coil has a ground wire running from the negative to the fan shroud. There is nothing in the installation that mentions the ground.
I know by searching here the Ignitor system is pretty popular and I hope someone can help me with this problem.
Thanks in advance,
Randy

As I recall from my installation, there is no ballast resistor and the wiring instructions were clear. Did you purchase a Pertronics? The output wire from the Pertronics is the input signal to your CD system, the same wire that your points output used to attach to.

Yes it is a Pertronix system. According to the instructions the black wire goes to the negative and the red wire shows to go to the positive side of the coil.

I think our points chopped the ground as originally wired, and the Pertronix chops +12v. I wired it as instructed and had no problems.

For a Pertronix the red wire goes to switched 12 volts.
The black wire connects to the the same wire the points connected to.
That is the black wire connects to the shielded wire that connects to pin C of the CDI.
Pin C is the input to the CDI box.
The outside shield connects to ground, either at the fan housing or at the CDI box, or both.
Pin A of the CDI box goes to the positive side of the coil.
Pin A is the output of the CDI box.
The tach wire also connects to the black Pertronix wire.

Thanks Doug,
Obviously I have some work to do. I have never messed with the CDI box, so I may have more questions.
Thanks for the help,
Randy

Randy,

Everyone has given excellent advice, and the task is much simpler than it may appear. Just a couple of pointers--be sure to find a SWITCHED hot wire to connect the red lead to. There are several in the engine compartment that you can splice into without going to the CD unit. I use a 12v. trouble light to find a switched connection and spliced into that. The ground (black) is easy. Oh yeah, be sure to set the engine to TDC with the distributor pointing to cylinder 1 wire before removing it, and mark the position of the dizzy to give a ball park timing position. (Ask me how I know). Really, it is not a difficult job.

I am getting ready to try wiring this thing. I was under the impression it wasn't going to be this involved. I guess I can throw the original instructions to the side. To reference the reply above by Larry, I have the ignitor installed in the distributor, why would I need to remove the distributor?

Randy,

Only to get easier access. If you did it with the dizzy installed, all the better. I found on my 75 that removal made installation with my stubby fat fingers a bit easier.

OK guys here's what I've done.
I hooked the black wire from ignitor to the wire that was originally connected to my points. A simple connector change.
The red wire from the ignitor is connect to 12v that is controlled by the ignition switch.
The wire from the negative side of my coil is connected to ground. That is how it orignally was.
The wire on the positive side of my coil is still hooked in the original place.
My car starts and will run. The tach works. It's seems to not rev like before I switched to the ignitor.
Does this wiring sound right?

Randy,
Very good, the wiring sounds ok.
Get a timing light and check the initial timing as well as if and how the timing advances as the engine revs up.
