Advise on 'glass front fenders
My car is eventually going to end up as an RSR replica. It'll be the '73 style, so will require the old style fenders. I'm in the process of buying a pair of old fenders, but the more I learn about how hard these are to get ahold of, the less I want to slice them up by adding flares. Which makes me look to the already flared '73 style fenders available from GT-Racing. Anyone have experience with this company and these fenders? Because my car will see street duty in addition to track use, I'm also concerned about fit and finish of these fenders. Any input is appreciated.

Fit of glass is a pain. It will be at home on the track but not the street. As far as making the little weather strip between the cowl and the back top of the fender look right and keeping the water from running down the gap when it rains (causing rust) - Good luck.
If I had the chance to do it over again I would have gone with steel. (Glass RSR nose, Front glass fenders and rear glass flares). s |

H2O911 is right. I bought Carbon fiber parts which were excellent, up to 99%. The last 1% drove me nuts. Small things like the cowl seal, the front inner edge ("point").
If you want it to look good at 0 and 100 Mph, Go steel. My $0.02, GeorgeK |

73 front fenders are hard to get a hold of? Without the RSR flares, these seem fairly commonplace.
My advice is to go with steel -- especially on fenders. If strict authenticity is your goal, then you're in for a bunch of money. But if strict authenticity is your goal, then you have no choice, do you? Short of concours fanaticism, there are all sorts of steel flares out there -- my car has an RS (touring) rear bumper that's made of fiberglass, and I matched it with steel SC rear flares that look virtually the same as original RS flares, but cost a LOT less. Speaking of fiberglass, I added an all glass ducktail decklid, and -- again, when you compare it to the steel pieces -- it looks like crap. I'm probably going to take it off and only use it for the track. (When it's standing still, at least, it looks THAT bad.) I'm new to this P-stuff, but aren't there steel turbo flares from later models that could be butt welded onto 73 front fenders for the correct RSR flare width? ------------------ --------------- Jack Olsen 1973 911 T sunroof coupe http://members.rennlist.com/jackolsen/Jalopy.html [This message has been edited by JackOlsen (edited 08-08-2000).] |

I put GT Racing rear glass bumper on my 79sc coupe, mainly as a weight saving device. The fit was great and after 6months it still looks good. The shipping charges to get it here are still disturbing my sleep.

I'm even told that new ones are not a good fit, as the original tooling is gone and even new originals are repros. I'm working on buying a pair now, but they're going to need quite a bit of work (used, and a bit rusty). If I've been looking in the wrong places (Pano, Excellence, Rennlist, every domestic dismantler I can find, and every PCA regional website on the eastern seabord) then by all means...correct me (why didn't I keep my byooo-tiful 85 Carrera....) Dave -
Well, I may stand corrected, here. I thought I was always seeing ads for these things, but a quick search produced only one set, and those at a pretty steep price (Gary Stratton E-mail: CarsRus2@aol.com -- 911 Fenders early and late new and used $350.00-650.00, Pair of FACTORY "RS" rear flares Yes the real thing I've been saving them for 15 years $1800.00 , 73 RS Duck tail maitted to steal frame $1500.00). Have you tried Doc 'n' Cy's, Aase Bros (if they're still functioning), Parts Heaven, PAP, Stoddard, Vertex, Rennspeed Motorsports, Einmalig, 20th Street, and Ian's Euro Parts? http://www.docncys.com/catalog1/index.htm http://www.aasebros.com/ http://www.partsheaven.com/new_parts.html http://www.pap-parts.com/ http://www.************* http://www.**********.com/ http://www.wholesaler-usa.com/rennspeed/ http://einmalig.com/ http://www.20thstreetauto.com/ http://www.ianseuroparts.com/ And for good measure (as long as I'm dragging from my bookmarks list): http://www.partshaus.com/ http://www.ep.com/st/c1148000v0azpg1.htm http://store.yahoo.com/partsobsolete/911912shopcom.html http://www.rennsportsystems.com/~porsche/ http://www.msroadrace.com/ http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/ ------------------ --------------- Jack Olsen 1973 911 T sunroof coupe http://members.rennlist.com/jackolsen/Jalopy.html |

Maybe I was lucky. I added GT-Racing RS front, rear, and duc tail and they fit very well. One of the few things that has went OK with this project. They were no harder to install than a friends OEM Porsche steel RS rear bumpers and all of the little hatch me screw you parts that are stock. I belive that somewhere I have read or been told that there is a radus difference between SC and RS flairs. I added OEM Porsche RS steel rear flairs. Glass fenders scare me, ever see a plastic packyderm (Corvette) with a blown tire. Need I say more. Are steel flairs avaiable from Porsche for the front as in the rear? RSR and ST cars had front fender flairs maybe they sell them.

Thought you might be interested in these guys.
They are in the UK so not that much use to you, but it might be an interesting comparison for you. http://www.clubautosport.co.uk/ ------------------ 911 2.7S Targa email:alex@cascade.f9.co.uk |
