Hi.. can a 964 be backdated to the 74-89 impact bumper look?
Apparently updating an impact bumpers car to 964 look is simply a matter of bolting on the fenders, but can the reverse be done? Reason: I wouldn't mind having several things about the 964, including more horsepower, coil (vs torsion bar) suspension, rear shoulder belts, better A/C etc, six speed G-50 but I really dislike the bumpers on the 964 --- I think they look like the ballast of a military ship. The impact bumpers to me represent "classic 911." I like the classic rear look of the lights from 74-89. Its what I remember from growing up/ high school. I am 37 now and starting in high school dreamed of having a 911. I realize that others may feel pre-74 Porsches are the true classics but to each his/her own. Also can you subsitute the 74-89 rear lights and red/black PORSCHE banner in place of the 964 version -- which appears to slant down and be more clear / outlined versus being vertical and having PORSCHE clearly readable. BTW I have searched many of the backdating threads and I realize people can and do backconvert 964's to look like long-hoods / pre-impact bumpers as part of an RSR look, but I can't find any information on converting back to only impact bumpers.

It can be done but I don't know how easily, this company in the UK backdate them to the Pre-impact shape, so impact bumpers should be OK as well. www.paul-stephens.com, look up the PS RETRO series which are 964 based. |

Yes it can
Yes it can.........
A friend of mine in Hong Kong is considering having this 1985 3.2 back dated ...to an Impact bumper stock - exhaust and all !!I know the garage that's doing it ...not a problem. They carry considerably more value here when selling for export to Australian market, there cant be more than say 20 impact bumpers in HK

A 964 has different mounts for the bumpers so that will be more work. I,m pretty sure that the standard Fuchs wheels wont fit either. But a very cool project anyway would like to see one done ! Cheers,

I'd recommend backdating to an even earlier bumper, such as one that was posted here on a C4. It would be easier since you won't have to mess with installing bumper tubes and all the impact supports needed. Personally, the bumpers on the 964 don't detract from it. In fact many hate the accordion bumpers they replaced. Goes to show that everyone's ideal car is different and there is nothing wrong with that.

One thing's for sure, you won't have a hard time finding the parts ! Lots of us doing or thinking of a long hood backdate will have the bumpers you need ;-)
