Can I install the warm up hand throttle on my 1966?
 

My engine likes to be held at around 2,000 for about 45 seconds after start up and then drop down a bit after that. I was wondering if I could just install a hand throttle instead of using my foot. Would this work on such an early 911 with carburators?

You would have to install a later handbrake assy I think and then just have to put that metal ring on your throttle cable for the hand throttle. It SHOULD work if the later handbrake assy fits in the tunnel opening of the early cars. You'll have to re-adjust your heater cable also I guess, back at the heater valves.

You do not need a new handbrake assembly. The bolt that mounts the handbrake also mounts the hand throttle (on the left) and the heat lever (on the right). Along that bolt are washers, spacers, and friction discs that allow you to change the position of the heat lever, for instance, and it will stay where you leave it. Buy the hand throttle lever, the collar for the throttle wire in the tunnel, and obtain the correct number of discs, washers, and spacers. Assemble it all and it will work fine.

I did this on a '68 912 about 30 years ago. Took a little study of the parts diagrams to figure out the discs, etc, but it worked the first time.

Thanks Brian. I don't have a heater control at the hand brake anyway. My heater control is in front of the shifter. I have a 912 converted to a 911. So this collar just rides the wire and hold it I guess? I wonder if I could just buy this stuff new.

Well, I'll be. PET does not show a fitment for a manual throttle prior to 1968. My conversion was a '68 912, and the parts were just like a 911.

If you check the parts book for a '68 or later, you MIGHT find that the parts you will need will fit. You will need a new bolt to fit the handbrake and the throttle lever, the various washers and "lamina" (friction discs). The book shows the same handbrake lever and "bearing bracket" (the parts that is welded to the tunnel and supports the handbrake lever) for 65-69, so the bolt will fit. Check for the cutout in the tunnel left of the handbrake bolt -- you should see the throttle wire and the cutout should be big enough to allow you to install the collar on the wire.

You might get them new. A dismantler will certainly have them too.

does anybody have a picture of how the ring on the throtle cable looks? I am thinking of doing this to my 73 fitted with a 3.0. The CIS doesnt hold the idle elevated any more when its cold.

As I recall, The "ring" or "collar" is a section of a cylinder maybe 6-8 mm long and maybe 10-12 mm diameter. It has a half-diameter slot that slips down over the throttle wire in the tunnel, and a set-screw that holds it in place.

In the meantime, is your AAR getting power? That plug is on the same circuit as the WUR and is powered when the fuel pump is powered.

Also in the meantime, there is a picture of the hand throttle in the 911 Used Parts Classified section -- search for "hand throttle." It shows the collar peeking out thru the cutout in the tunnel.
