Wires on Distributor
I have noticed that a wire that attached to the back of the distributor (using a tongue plug attachment) is very freyed and brittle looking. This wire is spliced with another wire that attaches to the fan housing, which is also in very, very poor condition. These two wires then form part of the main ignition wiring loom for the ignition, which as far as I can tell, is connects to the CDI unit (refer to the picture below with circle around the wires in question).
My car is a '76 and therefore has the 3-plug pin into the CDI unit, hence the wiring loom rather than the sigle plug in later SCs. Ever since I've had the car, it has had bucking, surging (usually associated with mixture issues I know) and snatchiness issues of varying levels of severity depending on the state of tune, that no one seems to have been able to cure. My question is, could the poor condition of these wires be contributing to these issues? I plan to replace the 'worn parts of these wires this weekend (the original wiring loom is no longer available from Porsche), but would like to know whether to expect an improvement in the running of the car? Also, Permatune did offer replacement harnesses, but these are no longer available. Does anyone know whether there are other supplies as I guess that whole harness is probably reaching the end of its natural life?

Sounds like the infameous "green wire" which the sponsor sells. And Permatune has a mixed reputation on this board though I don't have personal experience.
I replaced my green wire with sheilded high quality audio wire for about $2. Not sure who you went to that didnt point that out as a possible source of those symptoms.

I'm going to try replacing them with heavy duty wires on the weekend, as well as changing other ignition items (plugs, points, condenser, etc).
My thoughts exactly about the servicing and why I do most myself. I only use them occasionally so that if I ever sell the car, I can say that it has been serviced by a specialist from time to time to 'check' my work. I've had the car to 3 major P-car specialists during the time I've owned it and none have noticed the poor condition of the harness. Add to that a recent service that was undertaken to investigate these issues which resulted in the car running worse as a result of of an overly tight valve adjustment and leaving the workshop with loose wheel nuts, you can guess why I have a disdain for using so called specialists. This is not an uncommon case by the way (for one specialist, I had to return the car for rework on 5 out of 8 visits!). I now take the view that the only person who really cares about my car is me
