Removing sunroof motor, etc. ?

Hi all,

Anyone with a sunroof coupe remove their motor etc.? Mine is in need of cable replacement, and it is a 99% track-car anyway so I was thinking of just ditching the electronics in lieu of fixing it. What kind of weight will I remove and are there any issues in removing the misc hardware ...i.e. will my sunroof stay solidly sealed/water tight should I remove its associated hardware? Thanks!

Edward

The sunroof motor and tranny are fairly light and I believe the tranny drive gears hold the cables in tension. I don't think you can eliminate them without the sunroof sliding free.

Might be able to lock down the cables with some form of clamping to keep the panel in position.

The motor and tranny don't really weigh that much. Maybe one pound but it is in the worst possible place on the car.

you can pull the motor and the roof will stay shut. as long as the rear lift levers are over-center, they will stay that way.

Edward,

As stated, the amount of weight saved is minimal. The real weight is in the pan, rails and other parts of the sunroof design. If you choose not to fix the cables, at least occasionally open the sunroof manually (assuming you have the hand crank) and check to see if everything is relatively clean and dry, and to prevent the cables from corroding within the rails. Yes, moisture will seep in even in a closed sunroof.

OK, since I don't want to create any work for myself, I will leave it alone. That way I can be assured that the panel won't move. Thanks for all the words of wisdom, guys!

BTW, though: where can I get a hand crank? If I had one does that mean I can operate the roof manually even if the cables are shot?
